Description
Jessie's Wobbuffet originated from trainer Benny, who sought to trade it for a stronger Pokémon. At a Johto swap meet, during a Team Rocket scheme, Jessie accidentally traded her Lickitung for it when her Poké Ball fell into a legitimate trading machine. This unintended acquisition secured Wobbuffet a permanent place on her team.

Wobbuffet maintains a generally vacant expression and air-headed demeanor, frequently emerging spontaneously from its Poké Ball—a habit that initially annoyed Jessie but became routine. It regularly participates in Team Rocket's motto recitals and blasting-off sequences, integrating as a de facto fourth member alongside Jessie, James, and Meowth. Despite its dopey appearance, Wobbuffet occasionally displays strategic insight, sometimes ignoring Jessie's commands if it identifies a more effective counter. Loyalty defines its character, showing deep affection for Jessie and the team. This loyalty was tested when it abandoned a scheme to protect a beloved Kirlia and again when it chose to leave a potential mate—Dr. White's female Wobbuffet—to rejoin Jessie after a rescue, reaffirming its primary commitment.

In battle, Wobbuffet relies solely on defensive moves: Counter reflects physical attacks and Mirror Coat reflects special attacks. Its inability to initiate offense necessitates strategic use as a shield. Deployment was inconsistent early in Johto and Hoenn, but it gained prominence in Sinnoh, Kalos, and Alola, demonstrating enhanced durability against stronger foes. Notable battles include solo defeats of gatecrashers at the Wobbuffet Festival and participation in Jessie’s Contest appeals, though tactical errors often led to elimination.

Wobbuffet accompanied Jessie through multiple regions but remained at Team Rocket headquarters during the Unova arc due to its non-native status, still appearing alongside Meowth in Pikachu shorts. It rejoined Jessie’s active team for Kalos and remained through subsequent regions. In Alola, it battled James’s Mareanie in a staged Manalo Conference match that turned genuine, resulting in defeat.

Temporal anomalies in Sinnoh caused Wobbuffet to temporarily devolve into Wynaut while Meowth lost his speech. After the defeat of an alternate-world Team Rocket, Dialga and Palkia reversed these effects following Arceus's intervention, restoring Wobbuffet. Beyond combat, it acquired diverse skills over time, including vehicle operation, disguise proficiency (posing as a human or maid), and crafting Poké Puffs for Pokémon Showcases. It shares similarities with Misty’s Psyduck in its comedic role and habit of unprompted emergence from its Poké Ball.
