Description
Pankraz Gotha, called Papas, rules as king of Gotha. His marriage to Mada, a magician from a powerful society, sparks conflict when her family opposes their union. After monsters abduct Mada shortly after their son Luca’s birth, Pankraz commits to finding her, taking Luca on his relentless travels. Throughout their journeys, he exhibits protective parenting, healing Luca’s injuries and guiding the boy’s early adventures.

In Whealbrook, they reunite with Pankraz’s steadfast retainer Sancho. Pankraz falls ill there, enabling Luca and childhood friend Bianca to undertake a ghost-hunting quest nearby. Later, Pankraz and Luca chase Prince Harry’s kidnappers to Coburg. Confronted by the demonic Bishop Ladja, Pankraz sacrifices himself to save Luca and Harry, urging his son with his dying breath to find the Legendary Hero and rescue Mada.

Visually, Pankraz embodies a weathered traveler with frizzy hair, a fang necklace, a leather kilt, and a partial breastplate accentuating his muscular build. His stern yet deeply compassionate personality prioritizes others’ safety, marked by unwavering resolve. His death orphans Luca, triggering the boy’s prolonged enslavement and scattering their sabrecat companion, which keeps Pankraz’s sword as a memento.

Posthumously, Luca uncovers Pankraz’s royal lineage and his own claim to Gotha’s throne. The narrative later confirms Pankraz’s conviction that his grandson would fulfill the Legendary Hero prophecy. In the afterlife, Pankraz reunites with Mada, both expressing pride in their son and grandchildren’s deeds. Beyond the primary film adaptation, Pankraz appears as a non-playable character in *Dragon Quest XI*’s 3DS and Switch versions within Whealbrook, directing the protagonist during an incidental side quest.

The film adaptation condenses Pankraz’s role, accelerating his introduction and death, thereby lessening their emotional impact relative to the original game narrative.
