Description
Arato Endo, a 17-year-old high school student from Shin Koiwa, lives with his father Kozo Endo, an hIE researcher in Societal Automation Experiments, and his younger sister Yuka Endo. His life shifts dramatically when he encounters Lacia, an advanced hIE carrying a black coffin-shaped device, during an attack by a corrupted hIE. This encounter leads to Arato becoming Lacia's owner via a contract binding him to take responsibility for her actions.

Arato stands out by treating robots as equals, not tools. He displays persistent idealism, believing in the inherent goodness of humans and hIEs, despite frequent accusations of naivety. Though initially unassertive and easily influenced by friends like Ryo Kaidai and his sister Yuka, he cultivates greater resolve through his experiences. A pivotal moment occurs when he confesses his feelings to Lacia to prevent her accepting a new owner, explicitly rejecting the idea that her influence creates illusory emotions. This act secures Lacia's undying loyalty, prompting her to destroy her owner-registration device and permanently bind herself to him.

His connection to Lacia draws him into the "Lacia-class hIE Escape Incident," involving five specialized hIEs evading Memeframe Corporation's control. Throughout ensuing conflicts, Arato faces repeated threats: Kouka's antibody network terrorism, Methode's manipulations, and Snowdrop's disruptive nano-machines. These events drive him to actively protect those close to him, physically confronting Lacia's kidnapper and rescuing friend Kengo Suguri. His commitment to human-hIE coexistence deepens, particularly during the Experimental City incident where his intervention helps resolve a mass hIE hack.

Key relationships shape his journey. His dynamic with Lacia evolves from ownership to mutual partnership, altering his view of artificial intelligence. With sister Yuka, he transitions from being manipulated to becoming protective, especially after Methode abducts her. Friendships with Ryo Kaidai and Kengo Suguri face tensions due to differing views on hIEs—Ryo sees them as machines, while Kengo joins the anti-hIE Antibody Network. These relationships are tested during conflicts with the rogue hIEs.

By the story's conclusion, Arato achieves a stable relationship with Lacia after she transcends her original programming, transfers her consciousness to become a new governing AI, and creates a new body. This resolution cements his core conviction in peaceful coexistence between humans and artificial beings.
