Description
Setsuna Meiou, known as Sailor Pluto, is the solitary guardian of the Door of Space and Time. Her name, Setsuna Meiou, holds symbolic weight; "Setsuna" can mean "moment" or "sorrow," while "Meiou" combines the kanji for "dark" and "king," suggesting interpretations like "Momentary Dark King" or "Sorrowful Dark King," reflecting her ties to the underworld and the planet Pluto.
As the daughter of Chronos, god of time, she was entrusted by Queen Serenity with the eternal watch over the Door of Space and Time under three unbreakable taboos: never abandoning her post, never permitting time travel, and never halting time—the last offense carrying a death sentence. This duty condemned her to millennia of isolation.
During the Silver Millennium, she observed the awakening of Sailor Saturn and the fall of the Moon Kingdom. In the era of the second Silver Millennium, she developed a close friendship with Princess Usagi Small Lady Serenity, or Chibiusa, after the young princess strayed through the Door of Space-Time, a bond that deeply shaped her experience.
In the Black Moon arc, she intervened to assist the Sailor Guardians, shattering the third taboo by stopping time entirely to avert disaster—an act that cost her life. Her sacrifice freed Chibiusa from Wiseman's influence, enabling her to become Sailor Chibi Moon. Neo-Queen Serenity later reincarnated her in the 20th century, where she lived as Setsuna Meiou, a physics student with no memory of her past.
During the Infinity arc, after falling prey to one of Tellu's plants, she was reborn and regained her memories as Sailor Pluto. She then allied with Sailors Uranus and Neptune as one of the Outer Guardians to confront the Death Busters. Afterwards, she resided with Haruka Tenoh, Michiru Kaioh, and the reborn Hotaru Tomoe, helping raise the child in a familial arrangement.
Her appearance changes with each power upgrade. Her Sailor Pluto uniform consists of a white leotard and black sailor collar, accompanied by a garnet rod. The Super Sailor Pluto form introduces a garnet heart on her chest bow and a striped collar. As Eternal Sailor Pluto, she wears a star-shaped brooch, light black bubble sleeves, and a two-layered skirt.
In the Dream arc, adapted into the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal films, she and the other Outer Guardians initially lost their ability to transform under the dark influence of the Dead Moon Circus. After Hotaru Tomoe, restored as Sailor Saturn, returned their memories and Sailor Crystals, they regained their Super forms. She joined the united Sailor Guardians to battle Queen Nehelenia and return light to the world.
Her demeanor is defined by wisdom, restraint, and unwavering duty. She is observant, analytical, and possesses a quiet strength, often guided by logic yet capable of deep sensitivity. Though the eldest of the Sailor Guardians, she does not lead and regularly defers to Sailors Uranus and Neptune. Her protective friendship with Chibiusa and her nurturing role toward Hotaru reveal dimensions beyond her lonely post.
Her abilities are vast, centered on the manipulation of time and space. She can create spatial rifts, enable time travel, and generate force-fields. Her weapon, the Garnet Rod, permits teleportation and can foresee upcoming events. The Garnet Orb, part of the rod, serves as one of the three Talismans needed to summon the Holy Grail. Her ultimate, forbidden power is to stop time completely, an ability that exacts a fatal price.
