Gedatsu served as one of Enel's four priests in Skypiea, overseeing the Ordeal of Swamp with its 50% survival rate. He first confronted Tony Tony Chopper during the Skypiea Arc survival game. His domain involved flooding battlefields with suffocating swamp clouds. Despite his role, he frequently exhibited oblivious quirks: rolling his eyes backward into his skull, forgetting to breathe, attempting to speak with his lower lip impaled, incorrectly crossing his arms, inserting food into his ears, and entering buildings through windows. These lapses hindered his effectiveness, requiring correction from his Divine Soldier; when alerted, he typically reacted with shocked exclamations like "How careless!".
Physically, Gedatsu is tall and dark-skinned with upward-pointing tufts or dreadlocks spanning ear to ear and standard Birkan wings. As a priest, he wore a purple jacket and trousers, black gloves, shoes embedded with Milky Dials for flight, a pink shirt, a blue scarf resembling a tie, and a thick white belt with a red circle resembling the Japanese flag.
He wielded Kenbunshoku Haki, known locally as "Mantra". His combat relied on Dials: Milky Dials in his shoes enabled aerial mobility, while sleeve-mounted Jet Dials augmented his punches (Jet Punch), though he disliked using them due to clothing damage. His signature technique, Numagumo Burger (Swamp Cloud Burger), trapped victims in suffocating swamp clouds released from his sleeves. He specialized in melee combat.
During the survival game, Gedatsu battled Chopper. Demonstrating Numagumo Burger, his initial attack accidentally struck an ally. Though he injured Chopper severely, Chopper deduced his flight depended on the shoes' Dials. After Chopper removed one shoe, Gedatsu lost aerial control, allowing Chopper to trap him in his own swamp cloud. Activating his remaining Milky Dial while inverted, Gedatsu plummeted from Skypiea into the Blue Sea.
He crash-landed on Ukkari Hot-Spring Island, meeting Goro, an elderly digger. Gedatsu abandoned his ambition to become the "Boss-man" of the Blue Sea after misinterpreting Goro's goal as "Bath-man," which he adopted. He assisted Goro in digging for hot springs, defeating the Dirt Boss (a giant mole) and later the Forest Boss (a carpenter monkey). The subdued Dirt Boss aided tunneling. One tunnel accidentally reached Alabasta, revealing Goro as Koza's uncle. Upon returning, they discovered the Forest Boss had constructed the Ukkari Hot Springs Resort, where Gedatsu became head clerk. This made him the only priest not banished to a desert cloud after Enel's defeat.
Gedatsu maintained competitive but hostile relationships with priests Shura, Ohm, and Satori due to rivalries over executing criminals. Post-Skypiea, he developed a genuine friendship with Goro, collaborating on the resort and interacting amicably with Alabasta's royalty, including Princess Vivi.
In non-canon appearances, Gedatsu was briefly seen in Gran Tesoro during *One Piece Film: Gold* on security cameras displaying Monkey D. Luffy. He also attended the Pirates Festival in *One Piece: Stampede*, playing baccarat with Baccarat.
