Description
Tōshirō Hijikata, Vice-Commander of the Edo special police force Shinsengumi, is feared as the "Demonic Vice-Commander" for his ruthless enforcement of the group's 45 Regulations, thundering threats of seppuku for disobedience. This fearsome reputation permeates allies and enemies alike, sparing only Kondō Isao and Okita Sougo.
Born illegitimate to a wealthy farmer and his mistress, Hijikata faced family rejection after his father's death. His older brother Tamegorō became his sole caregiver and father figure. At age eleven, bandits attacked during a village fire, blinding Tamegorō as he shielded Hijikata. Consumed by rage, Hijikata retaliated, injuring the bandits' eyes to mirror his brother's wounds—an act that earned him the moniker "Thorny Toshi" and led to his exile. He roamed as a ronin, provoking fights at local dojos until Kondō Isao intervened during a brawl. Kondō brought him to his dojo, where Hijikata met Okita Sougo and his sister Mitsuba.
Hijikata sports short black hair (dark green in anime) and gun-metal blue eyes (red in manga). He typically wears his Shinsengumi uniform or, off-duty, a dark yukata. A cursed sword incident briefly fractured his personality, creating "Tosshi"—an otaku alter-ego clad in a light-blue vest, red shirt, and headband, marked by cowardice. This persona emerged during the Shinsengumi Crisis and Otsu Arcs, later sacrificing itself against Shinpachi Shimura in a boxing match. Another curse in the Dekoboko Arc transformed him into a female form with twin braids and a purple kimono, worsened by excessive mayonnaise consumption.
His personality melds ruthlessness with deep-seated compassion. Childhood trauma forged an iron will to protect loved ones, fueling his fierce loyalty to Kondō and the Shinsengumi—demonstrated when he rescued Kondō during the Mutiny Arc with Yorozuya's aid. Despite a volatile temper and aggressive exterior, he assists those in need (Yagyū, Shinsengumi Crisis Arcs), often cloaking kindness in irritation. He battles addictions to mayonnaise—drenching food and drink—and chain-smoking, once traveling off-planet to evade a smoking ban. These stem from unresolved guilt over rejecting Mitsuba's confession before leaving for Edo, contributing to his avoidance of romance.
Hijikata ranks among the Shinsengumi's finest swordsmen, wielding the cursed Muramasa blade. Combat feats include defeating Okita Sougo (Mitsuba Arc), slaughtering enemy forces solo, and bisecting a mid-flight bullet (Baragaki Arc). Shinpachi observed Tosshi's physical frailty starkly contrasted Hijikata's true strength, admitting he couldn't withstand Hijikata's direct punch. Beyond battle, Hijikata crafts heartfelt letters, aiding Shinpachi's penpal correspondence.
Key relationships define him:
- **Kondō Isao:** Hijikata displays unwavering loyalty, seeing Kondō as the Shinsengumi's soul. He prioritizes Kondō's safety and the group's honor, confronting Sakata Gintoki after Kondō's duel defeat.
- **Okita Sougo:** A rivalry laced with assassination attempts coexists with mutual respect. Okita's initial jealousy over Mitsuba's affection gave way to acknowledging their comradeship.
- **Okita Mitsuba:** Her unrequited love profoundly impacted him, influencing his romantic avoidance.
- **Sakata Gintoki:** Initial rivalry arose from clashing personalities and similarities Mitsuba noted. They share fears (ghosts, dentists) and combat synchrony. Hijikata sees them as alike—unforgiving of their pasts yet striving to prevent others from repeating their errors.
Hijikata evolves from solitude to a leader valuing camaraderie. His role expands during the Farewell Shinsengumi Arc as the group turns fugitive and the Silver Soul Arc, where he temporarily quits smoking—resuming post-timeskip. Historical inspiration comes from Hijikata Toshizō, the real Shinsengumi's "Demon Vice-Commander," informing his strict discipline and battlefield prowess.
