Description
Kirarisu is a Cocotama, a tiny divine being born from an object that has been cherished for a long time. In her case, she is the spirit of a lipstick that belongs to Misato Yotsuba, the mother of the human protagonist Kokoro. This origin makes her unique among the main Cocotamas, as she is directly tied to an adult's possession rather than a child's toy or belonging. Her egg, which in the toy line represents her, is purple.
In terms of appearance, Kirarisu is a small, kangaroo-like creature. Her fur is primarily a shade of purple, with cream-colored markings on her face and arms. She has distinctive heart-shaped ears and orange amber eyes. Her tail is designed to look like a dark pink lipstick, directly referencing her origin. She also wears eyeliner, giving her a more mature or glamorous look, and a small gold crown with a heart on her head. The symbol on her pants is two yellow sparkles.
Kirarisu has a very strong and flamboyant personality. She considers herself to be more mature and sophisticated than the other Cocotamas, often describing herself as sexy and beautiful. This comes across as vain or snooty to her peers, and her selfish demands frequently get on the nerves of the other main characters. In her debut, she immediately tries to claim another Cocotama's room for herself using her charm, leading to a conflict with the more hot-headed Oshaki. She is very confident and theatrical, unafraid to use her magical abilities to get what she wants, such as winking to make male Cocotamas fall in love with her so they will do her bidding.
Despite her seemingly self-centered exterior, Kirarisu has a deeper motivation rooted in gratitude. Her primary attachment is to Misato, the owner of the lipstick from which she was born. Her desire to observe Misato and help her is a key part of her character. When Kokoro takes the Cocotamas out, Kirarisu insists on going to the art store where Misato works because she wants to see her. An early episode focuses on her attempting to use her magic to help Misato with difficult customers as a way of showing her thanks, even though her spell initially goes wrong and makes the situation worse, leading her to become genuinely upset. This reveals that under her glamorous and haughty facade, she possesses empathy and a complex emotional core that contradicts her simple vanity.
Kirarisu's key relationships are primarily with the other Cocotamas and her human owner. She has a notable rivalry with Oshaki, who is not fooled by her flirtatious spells and is willing to stand up to her selfishness. Her magic, which involves winking to shoot cupid-like arrows, works on most male Cocotamas but is ineffective on Mogutan, as the arrows bounce off his large stomach. Her relationship with Kokoro's mother, Misato, is the most significant. Her entire identity is shaped by being born from Misato's cherished object, and her actions are often secretly aimed at protecting or impressing her.
As a Cocotama, Kirarisu possesses magical abilities. Her main power is the ability to influence emotions related to beauty and attraction. She can make people feel beautiful, which greatly improves their mood. However, if this spell fails, it has the opposite effect, making people feel ugly and unpleasant. Her most famous trick is using a wink to shoot magical heart arrows that make male Cocotamas fall in love with her, compelling them to obey her commands. She is also capable of creating clothes or altering appearances, as seen when she provides customers with clothing from their youth to make them happy.
Throughout the series, Kirarisu undergoes a gradual development. While she starts as a selfish and vain character who causes trouble for the Cocotama household, episodes focused on her reveal a struggle to balance her own desires with her duties to the group. Her narrative arc includes searching for happiness, trying to refine her magic, and learning to cooperate with others. She participates in group activities such as sports competitions and festivals, showing a slow but steady progression towards teamwork and community.
