Makoto Shibe holds the position of class president. His affluent father, city councilor Masakazu Shibe, shielded him from financial hardship. He possesses a strong attachment to his mother, described as a mother complex. This bond fractures when his parents divorce during his second year of middle school; Makoto opts to live with his father, prioritizing financial security.
Physically, Makoto presents a clean-cut image with short blonde hair and dark eyes, usually clad in his high school uniform. His personality mixes honesty and straightforwardness with bouts of frivolity. He speaks without filtering his thoughts, frequently offending others unintentionally, and finds keeping secrets difficult. Despite this social awkwardness, he remains fundamentally kind-hearted. He openly pursues romantic feelings for his classmate Shiho Sawaragi, though his advances meet rejection. One attempt to kiss her results in a physical confrontation.
Makoto's entry into the Tomodachi Game follows the theft of his class's school trip funds. As class president, he and vice-president Shiho become prime suspects. To prove his innocence, he promises classmates repayment, relying on his father's wealth. This plan collapses when his father is arrested for corruption scandals involving bribery, harassment, and financial misconduct, leaving Makoto unable to fulfill his promise. He consequently faces severe bullying and ostracization at school.
His situation worsens after his father's death, where Makoto is framed as the prime suspect. During a Tomodachi Game trial, he faces accusations of murdering his father, attempting to sexually assault Shiho, and impregnating a classmate’s sister. These allegations, later proven fabricated through manipulated testimonies by the game's administrators to test loyalties, compound his struggles. Financially, he inherits his father's massive debt of approximately 500 million yen, forcing his continued participation in the Tomodachi Game.
Makoto's character shifts significantly upon learning that fellow game participant and friend Yuuichi Katagiri indirectly enabled his father's corruption. This revelation, combined with his crushing debt and sense of betrayal, drives him to ally with Yutori Kokorogi and Shinji Shiba against Yuuichi in the game's later stages. His trust in friendships erodes, culminating in his role as a traitor within the group, prioritizing survival and debt resolution over former alliances.
