Description
Kazuto Kirigaya, known by his in-game name Kirito, is the central protagonist of Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale. The story takes place in the year 2026, following the events of the Mother's Rosario arc, and finds Kirito in a period of transition. He is now a student focused on researching potential universities for his future, reflecting a more mature and career-oriented outlook on his life outside of virtual worlds. However, his deep-rooted identity as a veteran of the deadly Sword Art Online incident remains a defining aspect of his character.

In terms of personality, Kirito in Ordinal Scale is shown to be more reserved and less immediately dominant than in some previous adventures. He initially displays a notable lack of interest in the new augmented reality device, the Augma, and its flagship game, Ordinal Scale, preferring the full-immersion virtual reality of games like Alfheim Online that he knows well. His personality is marked by a quiet determination, especially when it concerns the safety and well-being of those close to him, most importantly Asuna Yuuki. While he can be analytical and perceptive, as seen when he begins investigating the strange occurrences tied to the game, his primary driving force is deeply personal rather than one of pure heroism or adventure.

Kirito's central motivation in the movie is born from a crisis that strikes at the heart of his most cherished experiences: the fading of Asuna's memories of their time together in the original Sword Art Online. When Asuna loses consciousness in a boss fight and begins to forget crucial moments they shared, such as their promise to watch a meteor shower, Kirito shifts from a passive observer to an active and desperate force. His goal becomes singular: to restore Asuna's lost memories and protect her from further harm, regardless of the cost to himself. This personal stake grounds the high-tech conflict in an intimate and emotional struggle.

Within the story of Ordinal Scale, Kirito plays the role of the investigator and, eventually, the determined challenger. Initially a bystander less skilled than Asuna in the new Augmented Reality format, he is forced to adapt. As the plot unfolds and the connection between Ordinal Scale and the past SAO trauma becomes clear, Kirito takes on the mystery. He investigates the game's developer, Professor Shigemura, and confronts the top-ranked player, Eiji, who is at the center of the conspiracy. His role culminates in leading a final, desperate fight within a recreated Aincrad to stop a plot that endangers thousands of players.

Key relationships heavily define his actions in this film. His relationship with Asuna is the emotional core, with the narrative focusing on his fear of losing their shared past and his promise to protect their future together, symbolized by an engagement ring he gives her. His dynamic with the main antagonist, Eiji, is one of contrast. While both are former SAO survivors, Eiji is consumed by his past trauma and guilt, becoming an agent of destruction, whereas Kirito, though also burdened, channels his pain into protecting others. Kirito also works alongside his trusted friends, including Sinon, Leafa, Klein, and Agil, who support him in his investigation and in the final battle, showcasing his ability to rely on and inspire his comrades.

The film presents a clear arc of development for Kirito, largely centered on vulnerability and adaptation. Unlike past scenarios where his skills as a solo player transferred seamlessly, he is initially ineffective in Ordinal Scale because the Augmented Reality system requires physical movement and fitness, areas in which he has grown rusty. His development involves a humbling period of training, where he revisits the basics, including taking up kendo practice based on his sister Suguha's training videos, to rebuild his physical capabilities. This journey from a novice in the new system to a top-tier player is portrayed as earned through hard work, not innate talent. This eventual mastery allows him to defeat Eiji and contribute to the final victory, though he also receives an incredibly powerful reward weapon, a point some find to be a return to his overpowered roots. Ultimately, his development reaffirms his willingness to fight and sacrifice for the people he loves, solidifying his character as one defined by personal connection over sheer power.

Kirito's notable abilities in Ordinal Scale undergo a significant transition. At the outset, his legendary prowess from virtual reality games is of little use in the physically demanding Augmented Reality of Ordinal Scale, where his lack of recent physical conditioning is a major handicap. As the movie progresses, his ability to learn and adapt becomes his greatest asset. By training his body and applying his veteran game sense, he quickly masters the AR system. His signature skill, the Dual Blades technique, is ultimately not used in the real world but in a final full-dive recreation of the SAO boss room, where his original skills are restored. In this virtual space, he once again demonstrates his superior reflexes and combat prowess, using his full abilities to defeat the hundredth-floor boss. The conclusion also sees him briefly wield an exceptionally powerful sword, the reward for that victory, which allows him to single-handedly dispatch a horde of monsters in the real world, showcasing a momentary return to his most formidable and iconic state.
