Description
Suzaku serves as a Sword Bearer Yo-kai within the Yo-kai Watch Shadowside series, guarding the Sacred Sword Suzaku Soutenzan atop Mount Tsurugi. He commands authority as the master and guardian of the mountain's Yo-kai inhabitants, his duty symbolized by the sacred sword's ability to split into twin blades during combat.
He manifests primarily in two forms. His humanoid Sword Bearer form possesses peach-colored skin, emerald green eyes with dark green sclerae, and distinctive red eyelid markings. His red hair features purple and yellow accents, styled into long braided bangs evoking tail feathers, complemented by attire including a purple and yellow kimono under a dark blue vest, matching pants, gold-trimmed black shoes, and a green and gold belt bearing a phoenix emblem. His Celestial form transforms him into a large red phoenix with orange, green, and blue feathers, exhibiting peacock-like traits such as a slender neck and eye-spotted tail feathers, while retaining his dark blue ornate vest. When inspiriting humans, he grants them green eyes, orange facial markings, and a green aura. He also possesses a unique small blackbird form, frequently seen perching on his ally Bruno's shoulder.
Personality-wise, Suzaku embodies grace, refinement, and the reserved calm of a noble warrior, marked by deep responsibility and a strong protective instinct. This is contrasted by a notable clumsiness; a youthful transgression where he accidentally addressed the Celestial King as "Mignon Petit Roi" (Cute Little King) resulted in the loss of his sacred sword and his temporary transformation into a Genjuu.
His narrative unfolds across key Shadowside anime episodes. In episode 13, sought by protagonists for his sacred sword, he appears as a Genjuu, revealing its loss due to his past error. Recognizing potential in the human Bruno (Akinori), he gifts him the Animas Heaven-bearing Mirror (later named the "Yo-kai Watch Animas"), enabling Bruno to summon Genjuu. Episode 21 sees Bruno retrieve the Suzaku Soutenzan after a defeat by Voidera, restoring Suzaku to his Sword Bearer form. Though Bruno recovered it, the sword is entrusted to another protagonist, Cole. Suzaku subsequently aids battles against foes like Kabila and Genbu, employing techniques such as tornado generation and precise sword strikes.
Beyond the anime, Suzaku features in spin-off games like *Yo-kai Watch: Wibble Wobble* (*Puni Puni* in Japan), where his Sword Bearer (SSS rank) and Celestial (SS rank) forms are playable. Game-exclusive events introduce variants like Jaou Kinshou Suzaku and Daiou Gun Genjuu Suzaku, wielding different weapons such as shields and featuring modified, shogi piece-inspired armor designs distinct from his canonical anime portrayal.
His design and name draw from Japanese mythology's Vermilion Bird (Suzaku), one of the Chinese Four Symbols representing the south, summer, and fire. This aligns with his phoenix-like Celestial form and wind-based combat abilities.
