Description
Ryō Kurokiba, a student at Tōtsuki Culinary Academy, serves as aide to Alice Nakiri. He grew up working in a harsh Danish port town pub, eventually becoming its head chef despite his youth. This environment, which cast out weak chefs, forged his tenacious fighting spirit and reliance on skill alone. His leadership turned the pub into a local success, attracting Nakiri International. Alice Nakiri visited and, after numerous culinary duels, persuaded him to become her aide when he finally won against her. This victory led him to acknowledge her as "Milady" and follow her to Tōtsuki.

Ryō possesses a dual personality. Typically, he appears slow, lazy, and gloomy, speaking formally yet sparingly. He remains attentive to Alice's needs, offering deadpan critiques while maintaining subservience. However, wearing a headband or tight headgear triggers his "Berserk Mode," transforming him into an aggressive, wild, and intimidating "mad dog" with sharpened expressions and violent outbursts. Removing the headgear instantly reverts him to his passive state; he is aware of this duality.

His culinary philosophy treats kitchens as battlefields where chefs must force consumers to "submit" to their dishes. He rejects chef camaraderie as weakening, valuing fierce independence instead. Specializing in seafood, he assesses freshness by sight and touch. His early cooking emphasized "violent" and "forceful" flavors—intense and rich—rooted in his childhood belief that chefs must demonstrate power through their food.

At Tōtsuki, Ryō participated in key events. During the Friendship and Rapport Training Camp, he assisted Alice and completed the egg breakfast buffet challenge. In the Autumn Election preliminaries ("A" Block), he activated his berserk mode to prepare spiny lobster dishes that impressed judges, advancing to the quarterfinals. His subsequent loss to Akira Hayama spurred significant growth, pushing him to refine his approach by incorporating delicate and creative elements. Later, as the 5th Seat of the Elite Ten Council, he defeated Central Gourmet Organization's Kusunoki in a shokugeki by balancing his signature intensity with newfound subtlety.

His relationship with Alice remains central; he consistently protects her from threats and accompanies her, their dynamic allowing mutual criticism. Observations outside competitions, like noting the underlying bond between Alice and Erina Nakiri, reveal his attentiveness beneath his typically disengaged exterior.
