Description
Nagito Komaeda is a student of Hope's Peak Academy's Class 77-B, bearing the title of Ultimate Lucky Student. This title reflects an extreme and volatile form of luck that oscillates between incredible good fortune and devastating misfortune, a pattern that has shaped his worldview since birth. Physically, he is tall and notably thin with pale skin, messy white hair with brown highlights, and hazel green eyes.

His background is marked by the instability of his own luck, which has led him to develop a fatalistic and deeply entrenched philosophy. He believes that hope is the absolute good and that it can only be refined and strengthened by overcoming great despair. This conviction drives nearly every action he takes. Initially, he presents himself as a polite, meek, and insecure individual who tries to act as a mediator and optimist among his classmates. He is often self-deprecating, referring to himself as trash, and displays unusually low self-esteem. However, this affable facade masks a fanatical and deeply disturbed obsession with the concept of hope.

Nagito's central motivation is to witness and cultivate the ultimate hope, which he believes can emerge from the most extreme despair. He considers himself worthless in comparison to those he views as truly talented, seeing his own role as that of a stepping stone or catalyst for a greater hope. This leads him to take extreme measures, including instigating conflict, manipulating others, and even endangering the lives of his classmates, all in the name of fostering a situation where hope can triumph. He is willing to sacrifice himself or anyone else if he believes it will result in a stronger, purer hope. He views talent as intrinsic worth and can be dismissive of those he perceives as lacking it, though this attitude is tied directly to his hope-centric ideology.

In Danganronpa 3 The End of Hope's Peak High School Despair Arc, his role is to serve as a complex and unpredictable member of Class 77-B during their time at the academy. He is shown attempting to manipulate events to test his classmates' capacity for hope, such as when he procures a laxative to postpone an exam, a plan that inadvertently leads to the expulsion of several students and his own suspension. His actions are a precursor to his later involvement in the Killing School Trip. His presence serves as a wild card, occasionally disrupting the plans of Junko Enoshima even as the despair she sows begins to take hold. He eventually discovers the identity of the Ultimate Despair, and after witnessing the fall of his class and the death of Chiaki Nanami, he is corrupted into becoming a Remnant of Despair.

Key relationships include his complex dynamic with Hajime Hinata, whom he initially befriends but later treats harshly upon learning the truth about his lack of talent, though he still genuinely cares for him. He holds a particular interest in Chiaki Nanami, seeing her as a symbol of hope for the class. His interactions with Junko Enoshima are unusual, as his fanatical devotion to hope results in a strange, almost reciprocal fascination with her despair.

Development is shown through his initial attempts to foster hope within his class, his gradual unraveling as the school descends into chaos, and his eventual transformation into a servant of despair. His arc in this series establishes the foundation for his later role as a primary antagonist in the killing game, yet his core obsession with creating the ultimate hope remains unchanged, even as his methods become increasingly extreme and self-destructive.

His most notable ability is his supernatural luck, which can cause improbable events to occur in his favor while also subjecting him to sudden and catastrophic misfortune. He is also exceptionally intelligent, capable of deducing killers and formulating complex, long-term plans. He maintains a calm and collected demeanor even in overwhelming situations, driven by his unwavering faith in hope.
