Description
Fate T. Harlaown, originally known as Fate Testarossa, is a central figure whose journey is marked by profound personal tragedy and an unwavering commitment to protect others. Her background is rooted in sorrow; she was created as an artificial human through Project Fate, a clone of Alicia Testarossa, the deceased biological daughter of the mad scientist Precia Testarossa. Created to replace her lost child, Fate was instead subjected to severe physical and emotional abuse by Precia, who saw her as a failed imitation. Driven by a desperate yearning for her mother's approval, Fate was manipulated into collecting the dangerous Jewel Seeds, a task that led to her initial role as a rival to Nanoha Takamachi.

As a person, Fate is characterized by a quiet, serious, and strong-willed nature. She often appears reserved and shy, especially when faced with direct displays of affection, which contrasts sharply with the more exuberant personality of her close friend Nanoha. Despite her initial coldness as an enemy, she is profoundly kind, loving, and fiercely protective of those she cares about. Her traumatic past instilled in her a deep-seated drive to ensure that no other child endures suffering like her own. This motivation became the core of her identity, pushing her to pursue a career where she could intervene in similar tragic situations.

Fate's role in the story evolves dramatically. After Precia's death and her subsequent adoption by Admiral Lindy Harlaown, she changed her name to Fate T. Harlaown and became a key operative of the Time-Space Administrative Bureau. By the time of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Reflection, set two years after the Book of Darkness incident, Fate is an established TSAB investigator. She confronts the Florian sisters, Amitie and Kyrie, who are seeking the Tome of the Night Sky artifact, demonstrating her growth from a troubled child into a capable agent. Her primary key relationships solidify her new family: Lindy as her adoptive mother and Chrono as her older brother. She also forms a lifelong romantic partnership with Nanoha Takamachi, a relationship confirmed as canonical in later media. This bond is a source of immense emotional strength for her, as Nanoha was the first person to truly reach past her defenses and offer friendship.

Over the course of the series, Fate's development is a journey from self-loathing to self-acceptance. The revelation that she was an artificial clone and hated by her mother sent her into despair, but through the support of her familiar Arf, her device Bardiche, and Nanoha, she chose to affirm her own feelings as real. She eventually overcomes her existential doubts, particularly after encountering a facsimile of her sister Alicia, and comes to see herself as her own person. This development then extends to her becoming a mother figure herself, adopting children like Erio Mondial (a clone like herself) and Caro Ru Lushe, as well as co-parenting Vivio Takamachi with Nanoha. Her desire to grant the love she was denied is a driving force in her adult life.

In combat, Fate is known for her exceptional speed and proficiency in lightning-based magic. Her combat style emphasizes high-velocity melee and mid-range attacks, making her a "Fragile Speedster" who can strike quickly before an opponent can react. She wields an Intelligent Device named Bardiche, which can transform into several forms, including a scythe (Haken Form) and a great sword (Zanber Form). Her magical rank is exceptionally high, acknowledged as AAA-class as a child and reaching S+ (Air) by her teen years, earning her the titles of the "Ace of the Navy" and the "Golden Flash". Her signature abilities include casting electric projectiles like Photon Lancer and powerful beams such as Plasma Smasher, utilizing the cartridge system to boost her spell power.
