Description
Ryuji Sakamoto attended Shujin Academy as a second-year student. Raised solely by his mother after his alcoholic father abandoned them following years of physical abuse, Ryuji grew up in difficult financial circumstances. This harsh domestic life deeply impacted his emotional development, forging a profound sense of responsibility and a fierce desire to protect his mother.

He sought escape and purpose through athletics, becoming the leader and star runner of Shujin's track and field team. His athletic career shattered due to conflict with Suguru Kamoshida, the school's volleyball coach. Resentful of the track team's prominence, Kamoshida subjected Ryuji and his teammates to brutal training. The abuse culminated when Kamoshida deliberately broke Ryuji's leg during a confrontation over malicious rumors about Ryuji's family, falsely claiming self-defense. The track team disbanded, and Ryuji was unfairly blamed and ostracized as the "track traitor" by the student body. The incident left him with a permanent limp and deep-seated anger toward corrupt authority figures.

His life changed upon meeting transfer student Ren Amamiya (Joker). Accidentally discovering Kamoshida's Palace, a manifestation of his distorted desires within the Metaverse, they were trapped and faced execution by Kamoshida's Shadow. Witnessing Ren awaken his Persona, Arsène, and their subsequent rescue by the mysterious Morgana revealed their access to this alternate reality. Driven by a desire for justice and revenge against Kamoshida, especially after learning Kamoshida sexually assaulted Ann Takamaki's friend Shiho Suzui, leading to her suicide attempt, Ryuji confronted his own suppressed rage. This emotional turmoil triggered his Persona awakening, granting him Captain Kidd, embodying the pirate William Kidd and wielding electric-based attacks.

Alongside Ren, Ann, and Morgana, Ryuji co-founded the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, adopting the codename "Skull". His Phantom Thief attire featured a black jumpsuit with a metal vertebral spine, knee and elbow pads, combat boots, yellow knuckle gloves, and a distinctive black skull mask. As a core member, he participated in all major operations targeting corrupt individuals, utilizing Captain Kidd's abilities in combat. He favored blunt rods for melee and shotguns for ranged attacks. His enduring physical prowess, a remnant of his track training, made him one of the strongest physical fighters among the Thieves.

Ryuji's personality presented contradictions. Externally, he cultivated a delinquent image: loud, impulsive, short-tempered, prone to vulgar language, and frequently clashing with school authority. This behavior stemmed from trauma and ostracization, serving as a defensive mechanism. He often acted recklessly, leading to outbursts that sometimes accidentally jeopardized the Thieves' secrecy, nearly revealing their identities. However, beneath this exterior lay a fundamentally kind, empathetic, and fiercely loyal individual. He possessed a strong, unwavering moral compass focused on protecting the vulnerable and opposing injustice, regardless of personal cost. His compassion extended to forgiving former teammates who shunned him and readily offering help, like inviting the isolated Yusuke Kitagawa for ramen. He deeply valued his friendships within the Phantom Thieves, particularly his bond with Ren, whom he considered his best friend.

His character development centered on reconciling his past and finding self-worth beyond athletics. Through his Confidant bond with Ren, developed primarily through conversations at Shujin or the Shibuya arcade, Ryuji confronted his lingering resentment and feelings of being a burden to his mother. He took steps to rebuild the track team, not for personal glory, but to support others. Ultimately, he chose to run independently, symbolizing his embrace of personal freedom and defining his identity on his own terms. This journey culminated in Captain Kidd evolving into Seiten Taisei, based on Sun Wukong from *Journey to the West*. Seiten Taisei retained Captain Kidd's electrical abilities but gained enhanced strength, immunity to electricity, resistance to fire, and tripled evasion against wind attacks, while losing the weakness to wind.

Ryuji participated in the Phantom Thieves' activities across various media beyond the initial Kamoshida case, including subsequent Palaces targeting Madarame, Kaneshiro, Okumura, Sae Niijima, and Masayoshi Shido, as well as explorations of Mementos. He faced significant dangers, enduring attacks from powerful Shadows and surviving events like the destruction of a cognitive galaxy and temporary erasure from reality. In the anime adaptation, specific events differed slightly: first encountering Morgana only after the initial Palace entry, securing the route to Kamoshida's Treasure before rescuing Ann, and stealing Treasures at night.

Later adventures saw Ryuji involved in the Phantom Thieves' summer exploits depicted in *Persona 5 Strikers*, traveling Japan to confront new Metaverse distortions, where he developed a close friendship with Sophia, the group's AI companion. He also participated in the Metaverse-based dance competitions of *Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight* and the strategic battles of *Persona 5 Tactica*. His core traits – loyalty, impulsiveness, protective instincts, and a strong sense of justice – remained consistent throughout these experiences.
