OVA
Description
Hotaru Ichijō is a main character in the story who moves to the rural village of Asahigaoka from Tokyo. She is a fifth-grade student, around ten or eleven years old, who transfers to the local branch school because of her father's work relocation. Her name, Hotaru, means firefly, which is a recurring thematic element connected to her character.
In terms of appearance, Hotaru is notably tall for her age, standing at approximately 161 to 164 centimeters. This height, combined with her overall physical development and mature bearing, often leads others to mistake her for being much older than she actually is, creating a distinct contrast with her actual status as one of the younger students in the group. She has collarbone-length black hair with bangs swept to the right and brown, somewhat sharp eyes.
Her personality has two distinct sides. In public and around her friends at school, Hotaru generally presents a calm, polite, and responsible demeanor, often acting as a reliable and composed older sister figure, despite being the second youngest of the main characters. However, she can also freak out easily in stressful or unexpected situations. At home, particularly with her parents, this mature exterior gives way to a much more childish and pampered side that her friends would hardly recognize. She is full of curiosity and has a strong interest in the unique aspects of rural life, which are often new and exciting to her as a city transplant. Her adaptability to the countryside is quite high; she shows little to no discomfort with insects, reptiles, or food made from wild vegetables, often observing them with delight rather than fear.
A central and defining motivation for Hotaru is her deep admiration and crush on her upperclassman, Komari Koshigaya. This affection is triggered by Komari's petite and cute appearance, but it is solidified by a specific incident where Komari bravely comforted a lost and crying Hotaru despite being scared herself. This admiration manifests in several notable behaviors, including a desire to pat Komari's head, becoming flustered and lovesick in her presence, and a prolific crafting hobby. Hotaru is an exceptionally skilled seamstress and craftsperson, having filled an entire room in her house with handmade plushies and dolls made in Komari's likeness. Her abilities even extend to robotics, as she has mechanized one of her dolls to walk and talk on its own.
Other notable abilities include surprising physical strength, easily overpowering a friend like Natsumi Koshigaya in arm wrestling and being able to carry Komari with ease. She is also a capable cook and has a good knowledge of fashion, which sets her apart from her peers in the village. Her role in the story is to offer a perspective that contrasts city and country life, as her experiences growing up in Tokyo make the village's customs and slower pace a constant source of gentle discovery and humor.
Regarding her key relationships, aside from her close friendships with all the main girls, her bond with Komari is the most prominently featured and developed. Her other friends are Natsumi Koshigaya and the youngest of the group, Renge Miyauchi, who gives her the affectionate nickname Hotarun. Her family consists of her mother and father. Over the course of the series, Hotaru gradually becomes more integrated into and matured by village life, slowly learning its rhythms while balancing her sophisticated public persona with her more childish private side.
