Description
Rintarou Okabe, self-styled as "Hououin Kyouma," experienced formative childhood events. At age ten, he observed his neighbor and close friend Mayuri Shiina descend into severe depression after her grandmother's death. To prevent her withdrawal, he adopted an eccentric "mad scientist" persona, declaring Mayuri his hostage to provide her life purpose. This performance solidified into a sustained identity, featuring imagined battles against a shadowy "Organization" and serving as a coping mechanism. A significant high fever near the end of 1999, potentially linked to early activation of his later-named "Reading Steiner" ability due to Y2K-related worldline shifts, further impacted his youth. As a Tokyo Denki University student, he founded the Future Gadget Laboratory above an Akihabara CRT store, naming himself Lab Member 001. Mayuri became Lab Member 002, and friend Itaru "Daru" Hashida joined as Lab Member 003. They developed experimental devices, including the Phone Microwave (Temporary Name), which inadvertently facilitated time travel experiments.

During the original narrative, repeated time leaps and witnessing Mayuri's death across worldlines inflicted profound trauma, forcing Okabe to abandon the Hououin Kyouma facade. A more serious, strategic personality emerged, focused on altering fate. His attempt to save Makise Kurisu culminated in her death on the Beta Attractor Field worldline; he accidentally stabbed her while trying to prevent her murder. This failure became the defining trauma preceding Steins;Gate 0. He carries deep survivor's guilt, blaming himself and viewing attempts to change the outcome as invalidating Kurisu's sacrifice. This resulted in severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), manifesting as panic attacks triggered by Kurisu-related reminders, requiring daily anxiety medication. He abandoned the lab, the Hououin Kyouma identity, and his lab coat. Adopting a subdued appearance with black dress shirts, blazers, and neatly combed hair, he aimed to blend in as a "normal" university student, causing discomfort and concern among friends.

His re-engagement began upon encountering Amadeus, an artificial intelligence created by Kurisu's colleagues, Maho Hiyajo and Alexis Leskinen, using her digitized memories. Initially resistant, Okabe eventually became a tester, communicating with the Amadeus Kurisu avatar via phone. This interaction was emotionally fraught, offering painful reminders of his loss alongside a fragile connection to a simulation of Kurisu. Concurrently, Suzuha Amane, Daru's future daughter, pressured him to resume time travel efforts to prevent World War III, a Beta worldline convergence point. Paralyzed by trauma and belief in futility, Okabe refused. However, escalating threats emerged: Kagari Shiina, Mayuri's future adopted daughter, arrived with implanted memories of Kurisu; shadowy groups including Stratfor, DURPA, and Russian intelligence pursued Kurisu's stolen time travel research; and violence erupted around lab members, including attempts on Maho's life. Protecting Maho during an attack forced Okabe back into action. Kagari's presence and connection to Mayuri reignited his protective instincts. Witnessing the direct consequences of his inaction—his friends' suffering and the looming world war—gradually eroded his resolve to remain passive. A pivotal moment occurred when Kagari sang a song linked to his childhood promise to Mayuri, reminding him of his core vow to protect.

Fully embracing responsibility, Okabe reclaimed the Hououin Kyouma identity—not as regression to childish delusion, but as a conscious adoption of the persona's determination and defiance. He actively participated in rebuilding the Phone Microwave and committed to altering the future. He learned his future self (known as the "Poster" or "Professor" within the resistance) time-leaped over 3000 times back to 2010 from 2036, enduring immense psychological strain to gather data needed to reach the Steins Gate worldline. This knowledge underscored the stakes and personal cost. Okabe undertook a critical time leap to 2036 during World War III. There, he discovered his predetermined 2025 death was circumvented by Daru implanting earlier memories into his preserved body. Inspired by this ingenuity and sacrifice, he resolved to complete the mission. Returning to 2010, he destroyed the crucial research data and erased Amadeus to prevent misuse. Finally, he sent a D-RINE message (a delayed message set to arrive in the past of the current worldline) containing the instruction "deceive the world and tie the possibilities" to his past self. This message became the catalyst enabling the successful operation to reach the Steins Gate worldline. The narrative presents paths to this resolution: one aiding Kagari leading to "Promised Rinascimento," and another focusing on Mayuri and Kagari's bond leading to "Recursive Mother Goose," both converging on sending the D-RINE. His appearance evolved during this phase, reflecting immense pressure and fading depression, culminating in him stepping into the time machine for his final mission.
