Description
Minato Sakai is a professional Gunpla builder introduced in the Gundam Build Fighters Try series, and he appears as a supporting character in the OVA Gundam Build Fighters Try Island Wars. He hails from Osaka, where he was born and raised, and is a student at Tendaiji Academy Middle School. He belongs to the Gunpla Shingyo School of modeling, the same school that produced the builder Mao Yasaka from the original series. Minato is widely recognized as one of the top middle-school Gunpla builders in the Kansai region, and his technical skills are considered on par with those of Yuuma Kousaka, a builder famous in the Kanto region.
Personality-wise, Minato is smug, arrogant, and deeply convinced that he is the best Gunpla builder in the world. He has a strong rivalry with Yuuma Kousaka, toward whom he displays both competitive fire and occasional hostility, partly because he perceives Yuuma’s actions as inconsistent. Despite his overconfidence, Minato is able to admit when he is wrong, though doing so shocks him. He has a comedic side and often seems to have a loose screw in everyday situations, but when the stakes are high he becomes serious and demonstrates genuine skill. He respects the philosophy of the Shingyo school, which holds that enjoyment is the essence of Gunpla building, and he believes in creating models freely without being bound by established settings. His dedication to mastering the Shingyo style is a lifelong pursuit.
Minato’s motivations are driven by his passion for Gunpla and his desire to prove his superiority, especially over Yuuma. He also feels a strong sense of obligation toward his teammates; for example, he once gave up a regular position for the good of his team and prioritizes team victory over personal glory. In Island Wars, he is invited by Yajima Trading to a remote island to serve as a test pilot for a new battle system. Alongside other skilled builders such as Shia Kijima and Kaoruko Sazaki, he helps face a crisis involving a giant Plavsky crystal that causes Gunpla on the island to go out of control.
His key relationships include his rivalry with Yuuma Kousaka, which is fueled by mutual respect and animosity. He also develops an interest in Fumina Hoshino, initially drawn to her piloting skills and later forming a crush, though Fumina herself comes to dislike him due to past events. He has a cordial but competitive dynamic with other builders like Sekai Kamiki and Shia Kijima. Within his own team, the Build Busters, he is a key member who helped elevate the team to national-level standing.
Minato undergoes some development over the course of the series. While he remains arrogant, he learns to work with others and occasionally sets aside his pride for the sake of cooperation. In Island Wars, he joins forces with his rivals to resolve the crisis, showing a willingness to collaborate when necessary. His growth is subtle, but he becomes slightly more mature in how he handles both victory and defeat.
Notable abilities include his extraordinary speed and precision in building Gunpla; he is capable of constructing a model from scratch in just a few minutes. His building style is inventive and unconstrained by conventional designs, allowing him to create unconventional yet effective machines. His primary Gunpla in the main series is the Gundam Tryon 3, a combinable super robot. In Island Wars, he piloted the MSZ-008X2 ZZII, a customized Gunpla based on the MSZ-008 ZII, redesigned with parts from the ZZ Gundam. As a fighter, he is highly skilled in battle, able to hold his own against top-tier opponents like Yuuma.
