Description
Kazuma Shōji attends Tokyo Metropolitan Harumi High School as a first-year student, initially projecting a frivolous and apathetic attitude. He rejects social activities like soccer team invitations due to childhood Vanguard experiences. Repeated losses to his stepbrother Kazumi Onimaru and subsequent expulsion from the family alongside his mother extinguished his passion for the game.

He reconnects with Vanguard after encountering Chrono Shindou at Card Capital 2, requesting rule refreshers. During their first duel, he forfeits prematurely despite having a Heal Trigger, exposing a habit of surrendering at early setbacks—a reflection of his fear of failure. He reacts possessively when Chrono inspects his deck, storming out angrily. Chrono and Taiyou Asukawa recruit him for Team Striders after Taiyou’s duel reveals Kazuma’s potential to overcome setbacks with encouragement.

As a Team Striders member in the U20 Championship, Kazuma’s inconsistent performances—including losses from premature surrenders—strain team dynamics. His resignation during a critical match against Mamoru Anjou prompts Chrono to confront his self-sabotage, escalating into a physical altercation where Kazuma discloses his trauma with Kazumi. He briefly quits the team but rejoins after gang members kidnap Chrono. Kazuma defeats the gang leader to protect Chrono, marking his first steps toward trusting others and embracing perseverance.

Kazuma’s resolve intensifies upon learning Kazumi is possessed by Stealth Dragon Shiranui. He channels hidden passion into rigorous training, solidifying his determination during the U20 finals by defying Shiranui’s expectations through tenacious fighting rather than yielding. This shift culminates in his commitment to support those who believe in him.

Later targeted by the Apostles of Gyze as a vessel for the Dragon Deity of Destruction, Kazuma is captured and confined in Relics. He escapes after the facility’s generator overloads. Kazumi becomes his protector, though Kazuma later entrusts him with guarding Chrono instead. During a cardfight against Chaos Breaker, Kazuma’s intense determination activates the Gyze symbol on his hand, designating him as a host. After losing the duel, he is possessed by Gyze but retains enough consciousness to call out to Kazumi during their confrontation. Trapped in Gyze’s mechanical pod until TRY3 defeats the deity, he is freed with the Gyze symbol vanishing, enabling a reunion with Kazumi and Taiyou.

Post-Gyze, Kazuma returns to daily life and joins the revived G Quest event with Chrono and Kumi Okazaki, assisting Chrono academically. His fighting style centers on the Shadow Paladin clan, leveraging the Ritual ability—activating effects based on Grade 1 units in the drop zone. His primary avatar, Dragheart Luard, facilitates field advantage and stride support through unit retirement and superior calls. The upgraded Dragdriver Luard enhances field replenishment and Ritual synergy.

Kazuma’s relationship with Kazumi evolves from adversarial to protective. Initially resentful over their competitive past and family separation, Kazuma prioritizes Kazumi’s safety during Shiranui’s possession. Kazumi reciprocates by shielding him from the Apostles, cementing their reconciliation after Gyze’s defeat. His bond with Chrono proves foundational: Chrono’s unwavering faith helps him overcome his defeatist mindset, and he later risks his safety to repay this debt.
