Description
Kōtarō Takebayashi is a student in Class 3-E of Kunugigaoka Junior High School. He is a quiet, reserved individual who wears round glasses and has black hair combed to the sides. His family background is that of a long line of doctors who run a hospital; both of his older brothers are enrolled in the medical program at the University of Tokyo. This upbringing places immense pressure on him to succeed academically and follow the family path, and his initial placement in Class 3-E is a source of deep personal disappointment.

In the early part of the story, Takebayashi struggles with inefficient study habits. Despite putting in many hours, his grades do not reflect his effort. Under Koro-sensei’s guidance, he adopts a memorization technique based on creating parody lyrics set to anime opening songs, which dramatically improves his learning efficiency. He soon achieves top scores in the class, ranking seventh in the entire grade during the first-term final exams. This academic success enables him to temporarily transfer to the main-campus Class A, a move driven by a desire to gain his family’s recognition and by his rational assessment that his poor performance in assassination training makes him a marginal contributor to the class’s goal. However, after experiencing the cold, competitive atmosphere of Class A and realizing the genuine warmth and respect he receives from his classmates in 3-E, he chooses to return. He publicly defies the principal during a school assembly, smashing an award plaque and declaring that he finds 3-E more comfortable even than a maid café.

Takebayashi’s personality is characterized by a calm, analytical demeanor. He is introverted and often avoids direct eye contact. He is deeply passionate about anime and otaku culture, frequently visiting maid cafés and collecting merchandise. His greatest interest lies in two-dimensional characters, a trait that leads him to form a particularly close bond with the artificial intelligence Ritsu, for whom he designs a maid mode. He is also highly knowledgeable about science and medicine, a skill he demonstrates during a summer training camp when he tends to classmates who become ill. After returning to Class 3-E, he takes on the role of the class explosives specialist, studying gunpowder and bomb-making for assassination plans. He becomes adept at using directional explosives and calculating blast radii. His code name, given by a classmate, is “Glasses (Explosive)” as a nod to both his appearance and his new specialty.

Key relationships include his friendship with Okajima, with whom he shares otaku interests, though he sometimes withdraws when conversations become explicit. He bonds with Terasaka, whom he introduces to maid cafés, and with Chiba, because Chiba’s habit of avoiding eye contact puts Takebayashi at ease. He holds a respectful rivalry with Isogai in academics and develops a quiet admiration for the principal’s son, Gakushū Asano, recognizing the similar pressures Asano faces. Takebayashi also collaborates closely with Okuda, both in academic settings and later in life, when they work together on artificial blood research inspired by Koro-sensei’s biology.

Takebayashi’s personal development involves reconciling his family’s expectations with his own desires. Initially driven solely by a need for external validation, he gradually learns to value genuine connections over status. After graduation, he goes on to study medicine, entering the family profession, but he does so on his own terms. Seven years later, he is a medical student working at a national hospital alongside Okuda, applying the scientific knowledge he gained through assassination training to create synthetic blood. His overall arc highlights the importance of finding one’s own path while honoring one’s roots, and his abilities—both intellectual and practical—make him a vital behind-the-scenes contributor to Class 3-E’s efforts.
