Description
Mutsuki is the personification of the lead ship of the Mutsuki-class destroyers, a class named after classical Japanese month names. She has short brown hair with a reddish gradient and red eyes, and she wears a school-uniform-style outfit that is partially open, with a green skirt and brown pantyhose. Her personality is described as cheerful, hyperactive, and upbeat, with a gentle and somewhat feline demeanor reflected in her characteristic catchphrase, “Nya.” She is responsible and kind-hearted, often serving as a warm and welcoming presence to newcomers at the naval base. Mutsuki is the first ship girl to greet Fubuki upon her arrival, showing her around her new shared quarters and helping her settle into the Third Torpedo Squadron, which also includes Yuudachi and the Sendai sisters. Throughout the story, she acts as a supportive sister or mother figure to both Fubuki and Yuudachi, offering guidance and emotional stability to the more reckless and carefree members of her circle. However, she herself relies heavily on her younger sister ship, Kisaragi, for emotional support, and the loss of Kisaragi is devastating for her. This grief is explored further in the film, where Kisaragi appears to return but is ultimately consumed by the Abyssals, forcing Mutsuki to confront the painful reality of having to sink her sister in order to save her. Mutsuki’s arc centers on her struggle with loss and her eventual determination to continue fighting, drawing strength from her bonds with Fubuki and Yuudachi. In combat, Mutsuki is a destroyer assigned primarily to escort missions as part of the Third Torpedo Squadron. Her class is among the weakest of the destroyers in terms of raw power, but she is also one of the most cost-effective to maintain, allowing her to participate in sustained operations. She is later transferred to the Fourth Fleet alongside Mogami during Operation FS. Her loyalty, gentle nature, and ability to anchor her friends emotionally make her an indispensable member of the fleet, even if her combat role is more supportive than front-line.
