Description
Benjamin Canopus is a high-ranking magician in the elite USNA military unit Stars, commanding as Captain of the First Unit and serving as its No. 2 officer. He frequently acts as commander when the Head-Captain is absent. Starting as a major, he advances to colonel and later becomes Supreme Commander of Stars after reorganization. As of 2095, he is approximately 40 years old and has a daughter roughly two years younger than Angelina Kudou Shields. His family has connections to Virginia Balance through both parents and a relation to Kane Loews, Assistant to the Chief of Staff to the USNA President. He graduated from the USNA Military Academy West Point.
Physically tall and robust, Benjamin possesses a dignified bearing befitting his rank, with black hair, brown eyes, and an authoritative, composed presence. His personality is calm, reliable, and strategically minded, making him one of Stars' most sensible members. He effectively manages volatile personnel and handles high-stakes negotiations without recklessness, demonstrating rapid problem-solving in emergencies. He prioritizes subordinate safety, exemplified by his conditional surrender during the Stars rebellion to protect them.
Among Stars' strongest magicians, Benjamin is a First-Class Star Magician. He wields a specialized katana-shaped Weaponized-Integrated CAD, employing magic like Molecular Divider (weakening molecular bonds), Mirror Shield (reflective defense), and Press (weight-systematic magic). His combat skill potentially surpasses Angelina Kudou Shields' without her Heavy Metal Burst. Equipped with a USNA Thrust Suit for mobility and underwater operation, he leads critical missions, including the operation to destroy a Japanese facility developing "Meteorite Fall" in the Ogasawara Islands, confronting Erika Chiba and Leonhard Saijo before retreating after Katsuto Juumonji's intervention.
During the Stars rebellion, Benjamin battles Alexander Arcturus, Charlotte Vega, and Jacob Regulus to aid Angelina Kudou Shields' escape. He negotiates a plea bargain for imprisonment at Midway Prison to escape parasitic influences, securing identical terms for subordinates Ariana Lee Shaula and Ralph Algol. With Tatsuya Shiba's help, orchestrated by Wyatt Curtis, he escapes incarceration on July 22, 2097. His military honors are restored, and he is promoted to colonel and acting commander of Stars. He later accepts Angelina Kudou Shields' resignation, understanding her wish for civilian life in Japan despite concerns over losing a top magician. In later "Magian Company" events, he serves as colonel and Supreme Commander of the reorganized Stars. His operational callsign "Canopus" derives from the brightest star in the Carina constellation, following Stars' naming conventions.
