Description
Shunta Mogami, a boy from Earth with blue eyes and spiked red hair usually tied in a ponytail, constantly wears white headphones around his neck. His signature look is a white shirt featuring a yellow "S," baggy blue shorts, and a red jacket, though he dons a distinct outfit—a green hat, green vest, white undershirt, brown pants, and brown boots—during trials like Mistral-Bit's.
He possesses a notably childish personality, easily excited yet quick to voice complaints when displeased. This impulsiveness frequently sparks clashes with the serious Yoku Albatrosa. Shunta passionately discusses Battle Spirits strategy in lengthy sessions with his brother Kento and father Toshio, much to his sister Usagi's annoyance, and occasionally references his status as a national champion.
His journey begins after winning a tournament and acquiring the X-Rare card The HorseTwelveGodKing Exeseed, building his deck around it. The spirit Exeseed then appears, revealing Shunta is the red hero chosen by the Twelve God-Kings, and transports him to the Spirits World. There, he meets Eto Etoshinmori the 8th, a priestess serving the Twelve God-Kings, her pet Mofumofu, and her maid Kinoto. Eto explains that evil forces seek to resurrect a sealed evil God-King, requiring the reunion of the Twelve God-Kings to prevent it; as Exeseed's owner, Shunta is crucial to this mission.
Early confrontations establish his capabilities, such as defeating General Inui who sought his God-King. He soon encounters Yoku Albatrosa, another hero chosen by The RoosterTwelveGodKing Gale-Phoenix. Their clashing Battle Spirits philosophies cause immediate friction, prompting Eto to mediate by warning that the Spirits World's destruction could extend to their own worlds. Subsequent events involve witnessing Yoku's victory against the Red Knight Kabuto and joining the search for Mei Merryhadda, owner of The SheepTwelveGodKing Glorious-Sheep, who faces threats from battlers of darkness like Tatsumi.
Shunta engages in numerous battles, displaying strategic skill and emotional vulnerability. He competes with Yoku for the right to battle adversaries like Wabii and Sabii or Kengou, showcasing their rivalry. Homesickness strikes him upon seeing children play Battle Spirits, reminding him of his family. He supports Mei's growth as a battler, acknowledging his improvements despite early setbacks. Jealousy over Yoku obtaining Wind Demon-God drives Shunta to sneak off seeking rare cards, leading to encounters with counterfeit dealers like Kashira. However, he fortuitously acquires the real Flame Demon-God during this incident.
Key battles mark his growth: defeating Nobushii to reclaim Flame Demon-God's authenticity and overcoming Kiki Beresia, a descendant of the yellow hero, despite her Divine Demon-God summon. His most significant setback comes against Tatsumi, who easily overpowers him using The DragonTwelveGodKing Ourovorius, seizes Exeseed, and leaves Shunta critically injured. Recovering, priests grant him new X-Rares: The SeventhSkyBeast Radiant-Pegas and The FourthKnight Wedgetail. A rematch against Kazuya Taiga, to whom Tatsumi gave Exeseed, ends in Shunta's defeat, highlighting Kazuya's unresolved grudge.
Driven by legends of the Tiger Hero, Shunta scales a mountain seeking The TigerTwelveGodKing Revol-Tiger, demonstrating renewed resolve. His signature summoning chants evolve with his spirits:
- The HorseTwelveGodKing Exeseed: "Come out, my key spirit! Run through the grounds as fast as the wind! Summon!"
- Flame Demon-God: "Inverse scroll of flames! Scorch away those enemies who stand in the way! Summon! Imagine Brave!"
- The SeventhSkyBeast Radiant-Pegas: "Pegasus of flames, descend in a dance! Summon!"
- Revol-Tiger: "Howl, tiger of steel! By loading up the power of hot flames, crush down the enemy! Summon!"
- Super-Flame Demon-God: "Burn up, soul of flames! Gallant and Ferociously, Shoutout to the world! Summon! Imagine Brave!"
He consistently exclaims "V-V-Victory!" after triumphs.
Following the anime's conclusion, a sequel manga shows his return to normal life, interrupted by meeting Kouki Isurugi, a boy searching for his best friend. Concurrently, spirits in the Spirits World lose power due to the "Rokkishu" stealing core gems, propelling Shunta into a new quest to recover them.
