Description
Darius Ainsworth, founder and first head of the Ainsworth magus family over a millennium ago, mastered Flash Air (Displacement Magecraft) during his initial lifetime. He evolved this art from basic substitution into a potent reality-warping technique. His path shifted irrevocably upon meeting Pandora, who unveiled the world's gradual death through mana depletion and its replacement by a toxic substance. Driven by this revelation, Darius dedicated his existence to overcoming this crisis using Pandora's Box, aiming to transform humanity for survival in the impending environmental collapse.
To achieve his enduring goals, Darius developed "Conceptual Replacement," a unique magecraft enabling his consciousness, appearance, and entire being to overwrite subsequent Ainsworth family heads upon their deaths. This curse grants him a form of immortality tied to his bloodline. His current host body belongs to Julian Ainsworth, possessed at age eleven after the catastrophic failure of the Fourth Holy Grail War destroyed his previous host.
Darius exhibits a bipolar personality, shifting between calm, almost comedic conversation and manic outbursts. He harbors an intense love for theatricality, viewing allies and enemies as actors in a grand play, and reacts with extreme anger towards anyone deviating from his predetermined "script." He displays particular attachment to Erika Ainsworth, an adopted family member, doting on her and restricting her from leaving the estate without permission. However, this affection turns hostile if her actions interfere with his overarching ambitions.
As the primary antagonist, Darius created the Class Card system to facilitate the Ainsworth Holy Grail Wars. He achieves this by summoning Heroic Spirits through the mud within Pandora's Box, their diluted egos making them easier to bind to the cards and control. His first four attempts at conducting a Holy Grail War ended in failure, with the Fourth War causing a massive explosion of darkness that destroyed much of Fuyuki City and killed his previous host. The Fifth War, managed by Julian under Darius's influence, employed Dolls housing displaced souls of deceased magi as Masters. Although Shirou Emiya's victory thwarted Darius's immediate plans by sending Miyu Edelfelt (a natural Holy Grail) to another world, Darius reasserted control over Julian and initiated preparations for a Sixth Holy Grail War.
Darius employs his mastery of Displacement Magecraft for various effects: teleporting objects (like replacing a mountain with his castle), redirecting attacks, becoming intangible, creating illusions, and manipulating space to block or deflect powerful strikes like Excalibur. He can also brainwash individuals, as attempted on Illyasviel von Einzbern and successfully used on Rin Tohsaka and Luviagelita Edelfelt to serve as maids. His most significant application involves using Flash Air to periodically reset Pandora's personality and memories. By displacing her worn-out soul as black mud and storing its data within Pandora's Box, he reverts her to an "ignorant and innocent child" state to prevent despair over her immortality.
During the Sixth Holy Grail War, Darius captures Miyu and confronts Illya's group. He battles them, effortlessly defeating Illya, Chloe von Einzbern, Tanaka, and Bazett Fraga McRemitz, but retreats abruptly when Tanaka identifies him as a "Counterfeiter." Later, Illya stabs him with Rule Breaker while using the Caster Card's Include ability. This breaks his Conceptual Replacement over Julian and dispels the displacement effect concealing his castle. While incapacitated, Julian temporarily takes control.
Darius eventually regains dominance. After Miyu and Chloe confront Julian directly against his plans, he manifests through Julian, defeats them, and traps them within Pandora's Box. Following Illya's defeat of Beatrice Flowerchild, she faces Julian and Darius. Darius largely provides exposition during this battle, only intervening to grant Julian the power for a massive Flash Air on Pandora's Box itself. After Julian loses consciousness, Darius fully possesses the body, wounds Pandora, and challenges Illya, Miyu, and Chloe to a final battle.
In the final confrontation, Darius demonstrates overwhelming superiority, casually dodging or blocking all attacks. Using his status as the Holy Grail War's Rule Master and Displacement Magecraft, he physically crushes the girls' installed Class Cards by reaching into their chests. After destroying Chloe's Archer Card (which functions as her heart), Chloe sacrifices herself by ramming Kiritsugu Emiya's Origin Bullet into her own chest while Darius's hand is inside her. The bullet strikes Darius, and because his existence relies entirely on his permanently active Conceptual Replacement, it causes a catastrophic failure of his Magic Circuits and body. This dispels his possession of Julian and obliterates his millennia-old consciousness.
Despite this apparent destruction, Darius resurfaces shortly after. He explains his ultimate goal: Human History, like a tree, reaches an "Apex" in the future, but he identifies a second "Apex" at Creation's beginning, seeded by an existence known as 「The Creator」. He intends to replace his world's dying history with the untapped potential within Pandora's Box. Using tablets inscribed with his "Legend" (created using Miyu's blood), he plans to become 「The Creator」 of a new Human History. Transforming into a giant, monstrous form crowned with thorned tablets, he crushes Miyu, transforms her into a Holy Grail chalice, and consumes it. This act instantly erases all civilization, humans, and land from his world, replacing it with the Mud from Pandora's Box. His plan is to establish a new Human History within the fake universe inside the Box, ensuring survival as the current world ends—a solution he views as humanity's salvation.
However, Darius becomes frozen mid-action, reaching towards the hole in reality. This stasis occurs because his plan requires the current Human History to end completely before he can replace it with the new one. The continued existence of "observers"—Illya (saved by Gilgamesh at Tanaka's request) and Pandora (unable to die until the Box empties, impossible while the world remains frozen)—prevents history from ending. From their perspective, time is frozen, leaving Darius trapped "half-a-step away" from completing his apotheosis.
