Alain is a tall, slim teenager with messy black hair and blue eyes. He typically wears baggy gray pants, a black leather jacket, black boots, a blue shirt over a white undershirt, fingerless gloves, and a distinctive pale blue scarf resembling the flames of Mega Charizard X. In later appearances, his clothing retains its style but becomes more fitted. Originally an assistant to Professor Sycamore studying Mega Evolution at his Lumiose City lab, Alain embarked on a personal journey to master its power and become the strongest trainer. Early on, he encountered Lysandre, who awarded him a Key Stone and Charizardite X after proving his strength, enabling Alain's Charmeleon—later Charizard—to Mega Evolve. Lysandre framed this gift as a way for Alain to gain the strength needed to protect those important to him. Alain traveled Kalos and Hoenn battling other Mega Evolution users to collect data for Lysandre. He reluctantly allowed novice trainer Mairin and her Chespie to accompany him. Despite initial hesitation, he developed a protective bond with Mairin, coaching her in training and strategy. Key events included a battle against Elite Four member Siebold, where Alain lost but earned recognition, and a confrontation with Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre, and Mega Rayquaza in Hoenn alongside Champion Steven Stone. During this event, Alain shielded Mairin from an attack, sustaining injuries. In the events of Mega Evolution Special IV, Alain returned to Lysandre Labs to undertake a rigorous challenge: defeating ten consecutive Mega Evolution users. Lysandre stipulated a single loss would forfeit his Key Stone and Charizardite X. During these battles, Mairin and Steven arrived. Believing Mairin hindered his pursuit of strength, Alain harshly rejected her as a burden, causing her to flee in distress. While emotionally distraught, Mairin's Chespie wandered into a restricted lab and encountered small, green, cell-like creatures. An energy experiment caused an explosion; Chespie helped one creature escape but absorbed residual energy, collapsing into a coma. Concurrently, Alain completed his tenth battle against Elite Four member Malva and her Mega Houndoom. Despite Malva exploiting Houndoom's Flash Fire, Alain won using Charizard's Blast Burn. Learning of Chespie's condition—physically unharmed but unresponsive—consumed Alain with guilt and anger, blaming himself for pushing Mairin away. Lysandre pledged resources for a cure, prompting Alain to focus entirely on healing Chespie, driven by his desire to see Mairin smile again. Alain is predominantly stoic and reserved, showing minimal emotion during battles and interactions. He exhibits intense focus on self-improvement and victory, partly fueled by his loss to Siebold. Underneath his aloof exterior lies deep loyalty to those he cares about, especially Mairin and Professor Sycamore. His often cold-seeming actions stem from a protective instinct; his rejection of Mairin aimed to shield her from danger. His guilt over Chespie's coma and determination to atone demonstrate underlying compassion. After the Mega Evolution Specials, Alain entered the Kalos League, defeating Ash Ketchum in the finals to become Champion. He later ranked 6th in the World Coronation Series' Masters Eight. During Team Flare's assault on Lumiose City, Alain initially aided Lysandre but felt betrayed upon realizing the organization's destructive goals. He allied with Ash to thwart Team Flare, helping save Kalos. Post-crisis, he experienced profound remorse for his role in Lysandre's plans but found renewed purpose after a conversation with Ash, rejoining Professor Sycamore as his assistant. Alain's bond with Charizard is central, marked by mutual trust and a shared resolve to protect others. His team also includes Pokémon like Bisharp, Chesnaught, and Malamar, though Charizard remains his primary partner. His journey reflects a continuous pursuit of strength intertwined with personal redemption.
