Description
Azusa Noyama earned her enduring nickname "Azuki-chan" in first grade when classmate Ken Takayanagi misread her name "Azusa" as "Azuki." She initially despised the nickname. Her feelings transformed dramatically in fifth grade upon meeting transfer student Yunosuke Ogasawara. Hearing Ken tease her, Yunosuke declared he liked "Azuki," prompting her to embrace the nickname and sparking immediate romantic feelings. This pivotal moment intertwined her self-perception with Yunosuke's approval.

She resides in an apartment with her family: mother Keiko, father Tadashi, and younger brother Daizu. Tadashi possesses diverse skills including voice mimicry, electrical repair, and cooking. Keiko struggles to refuse requests, resulting in household clutter during neighborhood bazaars. Daizu frequently annoys Azusa but shares a kindhearted bond with neighborhood cats. Her grandfather, Gozo, an anime-exclusive character and former police officer, initially opposed her relationship with Yunosuke. He later accepted it after internal reflection triggered by memories of his late wife.

Azusa maintains three close friendships. Kaoru Nishino is timid, sensitive, and harbors unrequited feelings for Ken. Midori Kodama ("Jidama") is a tomboy who favors overalls and avoids dresses. Tomomi Takahashi ("Tomo"), the class president who wears glasses, carries a torch for Yunosuke's friend Makoto. Azusa co-founded the "Club of Unreturned Love" with Kaoru and Tomo to navigate their romantic challenges. She frequently experiences jealousy, particularly directed at wealthy classmate Yoko Sakakibara, who actively pursues Yunosuke and attempts to undermine their connection.

Her relationship with Yunosuke deepens through shared experiences. They maintain a joint diary chronicling their interactions and feelings. An early significant moment was their accidental first kiss after older students injured Yunosuke; both mistakenly believed it could result in Azuki having a baby. Yunosuke consistently displays kindness and responsibility, such as skillfully caring for infants, contrasting Azuki's occasional possessiveness when he interacts with other girls or figures like a new music teacher. This jealousy proves temporary as she learns to trust their bond over time.

Key events mark her emotional journey. She participated in a school trip to Okinawa, though later choices prioritizing her connection with Yunosuke over friendships caused temporary rifts. Her grandfather's resistance softened into acceptance after a symbolic gesture. In the manga's conclusion, she marries Yunosuke at age 20 and they have fraternal twins, fulfilling their long-term romantic arc. Her friend Kaoru similarly marries Ken, resolving earlier unrequited feelings.

Her personality blends optimistic perseverance, evidenced by her rallying cry "I'm always positive! Always!," with deductive reasoning, demonstrated once by using Sherlock Holmes-inspired methods to locate Ken. She also struggles with separation anxiety, becoming visibly distressed during summer visits to relatives without Yunosuke. Her typical attire features girlish pigtails and skirtalls, presenting a conventional style contrasting with Jidama's tomboy appearance.
