Description
Kiseno Urano lives with her family in the seaside town of Eba near Hiroshima. She is the wife of Juro Urano and mother to Suzu Urano, younger daughter Sumi Urano, and son Yoichi Urano. The family initially cultivates and trades seaweed for their livelihood. When land reclamation destroys the seaweed beds, they transition to factory work to sustain themselves. Kiseno dedicates her days to domestic duties and supporting her family through the economic hardships of Japan's pre-war and wartime era.
On August 6, 1945, Kiseno journeys into Hiroshima City seeking supplies amidst severe rationing. She is present in the city when the atomic bomb detonates. In the aftermath, Kiseno is reported missing. No contact is ever re-established, leading to the presumption that the bomb's initial blast and shock wave killed her instantly. Her disappearance and presumed death contribute significantly to the fracturing of the Urano family. Her husband Juro later succumbs to radiation-related illness, and her son Yoichi had been previously reported killed in military action. Her younger daughter Sumi survives the initial bombing but suffers from radiation sickness. Kiseno's fate exemplifies the widespread civilian tragedy of the Hiroshima bombing.
