Description
Suzu Urano grows up in Eba, a coastal town in Hiroshima, displaying artistic talent from childhood with drawing becoming a lifelong defining trait. At 18 in 1943, she marries Shusaku Hojo after his unexpected proposal references their brief childhood encounter. The marriage requires her relocation to Kure, where she integrates into Shusaku’s family household.

Adapting to wartime domestic life, she manages rationed food supplies and participates in civil defense preparations against air raids. Her perseverance anchors the household through escalating World War II hardships.

In 1945, a time-delayed bomb detonates near her during a Kure air raid, claiming her right hand—essential for her art—and killing her young niece Harumi. This plunges her into depression, prompting plans to return to her Hiroshima family for safety, though her departure stalls.

On August 6, 1945, she witnesses the atomic bombing of Hiroshima from Kure. The catastrophe severs contact with her family. She later learns her mother died instantly in the blast, her father succumbed to radiation sickness months after, and her sister Sumi survived but developed severe radiation illness.

Post-surrender, Suzu confronts profound grief yet gradually finds purpose. She and Shusaku adopt an orphaned girl, catalyzing Suzu’s emotional recovery. This act reignites her resilience and nurturing instincts, channeling creativity into teaching the child sewing and other skills in their postwar existence.

Her personality blends earnestness, kindness, and quiet determination to overcome adversity. She consistently prioritizes others’ needs over her own to maintain family harmony, aligning with ISFJ personality traits and Enneagram Type 9 through conflict avoidance and pursuit of peace.
