Description
Koromo Amae is a second-year student at Ryuumonbuchi High School and captain of its mahjong team. A tragic childhood claimed her parents, leading to years of reclusion and solitude under her neglectful uncle's care. This isolation bred profound loneliness and bitterness, fostering deep distrust of others and a self-perception as non-human. Her cousin, Touka Ryuumonbuchi, eventually intervened, reintegrating her into society and forming a mahjong team to provide companionship.
Despite her age, Koromo possesses a distinctly childlike appearance, standing 127 cm (4'2") tall with long blonde hair and blue eyes. Her distinctive attire includes a red bunny ears headband (later replaced by a pink bow), a white-and-red dress, wristbands, and thigh-high stockings. This youthful look frequently causes others to mistake her for a child, a misconception she intensely resents, especially within mahjong where non-dealers are called "kodomo" (children)—a term uncomfortably close to her name.
Her personality manifests in three distinct states. The first is hyperactive and carefree; she bounces with childlike glee, employs literary speech, and invents words. The second is melancholic and introspective; she wanders aimlessly, haunted by her traumatic past and the belief her only value lies in mahjong—a skill she once deemed worthless. The third state emerges during competitive play, particularly under a full moon; cold disdain twists her features as she becomes volatile and cruel towards opponents, embracing her self-perceived "demonic" identity. While these shifts prompted speculation about bipolar disorder, forming friendships later mellowed her tendencies.
In mahjong, Koromo is a feared "national-class monster," aggressively pursuing high-value hands. Her signature ability is "Haitei Raoyue," consecutively winning with the final tile drawn from the wall under favorable conditions. Her gameplay intensifies dramatically during a full moon, amplifying her erratic behavior and tactical dominance. Assessments note maximum luck and potential (5/5), high speed and disruption (4/5 each), but critically low analysis and willpower (1/5 each).
Her narrative arc begins with ominous foreshadowing as the player who ended Kazekoshi Girls' High School's winning streak. Initially avoiding the Prefectural Tournament, she participates after learning of Saki Miyanaga's potential. Koromo dominates the captain's match with consecutive wins, aiming to crush opponents' spirits. However, Saki's resilience and declaration of intent to reunite her family triggers Koromo's traumatic memories, culminating in an emotional breakdown. Saki defeats her with a direct-hit yakuman, sparking an epiphany: mahjong can be enjoyable when played with others, marking the start of her emotional healing.
Later developments, including the "Saki Biyori" OAD, show her integration into Ryuumonbuchi's surrogate "family." Teammates assume roles: Touka and Jun as parents, Tomoki and Hajime as siblings, and Koromo as the cherished youngest member. This dynamic stabilizes her mental state, though vestiges of her darker moods linger. Her journey concludes with newfound acceptance of friendship and a less adversarial approach to mahjong, evidenced by opponents like Kana Ikeda expressing a desire to play her again.
