Description
Kanetsugu Hōryokuin leads a group of green battlers and co-rules the Musashi region with Toshiie Homura. He favors the green battle color and wields key cards like The WhirlwindNinja Kirikage, The ShinobiCommander Kurohagane, and The EarthShinobi Daibeet, alongside X-Rares such as The HornetKing Fong-Need. His deck strategy focuses on green spirits and magic cards, including Wind Release Technique and Double Body Swap.

Serious and ambitious, Kanetsugu declares love as his core motivation for battle and his reason never to lose. He harbors a deep dislike for outlaws, seeing them as destructive to Musashi. Spiked green hair crowns his head, complemented by green eyes and a muscular build. His attire consists of a white shirt under a green sleeveless vest, yellowish-tan pants, green boots, green fingerless gloves, an orange beaded necklace, and a short scar-like line on his left cheek.

Intrigued by Yukimura Rekka after Toshiie's defeat, Kanetsugu sought to expand green influence across Musashi. Despite a close battle, Yukimura defeated him in their first encounter, where Kanetsugu withheld his key spirit. This loss plunged him into self-doubt and rigorous training. During this period, Ranmaru Shikigami challenged him. Kanetsugu won, though Ranmaru seemed unfocused, and subsequently gifted him a new card, believing Kanetsugu could master Soul Core abilities.

Seeking a rematch with Yukimura, Kanetsugu entered a small tournament involving Toshiie and Souun Gunjou. He battled Souun, his former teammate who left to surpass him. Kanetsugu defeated her using a new strategy instead of his typical core boost, attributing his victory to bigger dreams. He later defeated Yukimura in the tournament final using Soul Burst, temporarily unifying Musashi under his leadership. This peace shattered when Ranmaru spread rumors labeling Kanetsugu a coward for avoiding another Yukimura challenge. Unaware his followers hid the challenge, Kanetsugu accepted and lost to Yukimura's enhanced Soul Burst at Musashi stadium.

Ranmaru challenged him again, framing it as punishment. After losing this battle, Kanetsugu was imprisoned, and his group absorbed into the white gang's army. Ranmaru and Toukichirou imposed order in his name. Yukimura, Souun, and Toshiie later secured his freedom after uncovering the truth, leading Kanetsugu to regret his past actions and seek personal change.

Following the Warring States Championship announcement, Kanetsugu, Souun, and Toshiie vied for spots on Yukimura's team. Kanetsugu defeated Toshiie, and after Toshiie withdrew, Kanetsugu and Souun joined. His team advanced easily through the preliminary tournament and defeated the Shikoku representatives in the finals' first round. After battlers were reorganized into individual matches for the second round, he won against Nagayori Akai in the quarterfinals.

His next quarterfinal match was against Toshiie, a decisive battle for their Musashi rivalry. Toshiie narrowly won this intense duel, resolving their conflict. After Toshiie suffered fatal injuries losing to Dairokuten Maou in the semifinals, Kanetsugu aided Yukimura by providing Sengoku-Tiger to enhance Yukimura's deck against Nobunaga. He battled Yukimura and supported him during the final confrontation with Nobunaga. In the epilogue, he trains to surpass Yukimura.

The character draws inspiration from Naoe Kanetsugu, a samurai who served Kagekatsu Uesugi, reflected in his personality and thematic emphasis on "love," referencing the "ai" (love) kanji on his namesake's kabuto helmet.
