Description
Shadow Joker, alias Cyan or Shawn, operates as a phantom thief and rival to protagonist Joker. He mirrors Joker closely in age, build, and facial structure, distinguished by spiky jet-black hair (manga) or cyan hair (anime), golden almond-shaped eyes, sharp teeth, and two prominent scars crossing his left eye. His signature attire features a dark suit paired with a cyan cape, pink or purple accents, white gloves, and a bright pink mask.
Born in the secluded Witch Village, Cyan grew up with his twin sister Rose following their parents' death in an infant epidemic. A studious child who dreamt of world travel, he adopted cartoon villain mannerisms and forced himself to drink black coffee to project intimidation. His life fractured during an errand when he clashed with young Jack Jones, leading to a temporary identity swap. During this chaos, Professor Clover's forces attacked the village to capture Rose for her supernatural abilities. Cyan sustained two gunshot wounds across his left eye and body while trying to save her, resulting in permanent scars. Presumed dead after falling into a lake, he was instead recruited by Clover.
Operating as Shadow Joker, he became a brutal, unpredictable antagonist. Motivated by hatred and the need to protect Rose—who remained under Clover's control—he favored destructive close combat and explosives over strategy. His primary weapons were "Bloody Rain," an umbrella firing laser beams and enabling flight, and the "Black Speeder," a motorcycle capable of 301 km/h. He also utilized a J Pin for smokescreens. During this phase, he framed Joker for crimes, culminating in direct clashes like their battle over the Gemini Crown.
His trajectory shifted after Joker's gang freed Rose from Clover. Released from manipulation, Shadow Joker and Rose allied with Joker against mutual foes like Devil's Fang. While maintaining a fierce rivalry with Joker, he collaborated when necessary, including during time-travel incidents. Post-redemption, his demeanor grew more comical and laid-back; he retained chuunibyou traits like dramatic catchphrases but revealed softer aspects, such as doting on Rose and secretly sweetening his coffee when alone. He also constructed "The Castle of Dark Dragon," featuring a room dedicated to researching Joker.
His backstory and development are detailed in the manga's "The End to a Long Night" arc and anime episodes like "The Shadow Descends," with his pivotal relationship with Rose driving his evolution from villainy to reluctant heroism.
