Description
Shungiku Koikawa, known as "Killer of 99," stands 182 cm tall with a muscular frame covered in deep scars. He wears a black kimono featuring flame designs and carries four katana: one on each hip, one horizontally behind his waist, and one diagonally across his back. Wild, spiky hair is kept back by a yellow bandanna.
The son of a bandit leader, Shungiku initially avoided violence due to his mother Okiku's influence. Discovering her murdered, he blamed his father and slaughtered the entire gang in a rage, including his father, resulting in 99 deaths and his epithet. He later learned the Mushikari group was actually responsible for his mother's death.
Seeking repentance, he joined the Mushibugyō organization as a constable specializing in slashing insects. Though often appearing as a perverted sake enthusiast who avoids work, he harbors deep guilt over his past killings, describing his hands as "heavy as lead" from the burden.
Key relationships reveal his development. Jinbei Tsukishima's unwavering loyalty during a false theft accusation—where Shungiku was jailed but broke out with Jinbei's help—solidified their bond. During their escape, Shungiku prioritized protecting civilians from a Bladed Mantis over personal vengeance against an arresting officer seeking retribution for past killings.
Discovering comrade Mugai was formerly the Mushikari leader, Shungiku attacked him relentlessly. He halted only when Mugai discarded his weapon, refusing to fight an ally, demonstrating Shungiku's capacity to prioritize camaraderie over vengeance.
Fighting regenerative Crucifix Insects, he unveiled the "Compassion Slash," a technique reflecting his emotional growth. By slicing faster than his opponents could heal, he reduced them to powder without unnecessary suffering. During this battle, he expressed regret for all 99 killings and clarified he spared his father intentionally to avoid becoming like him.
His abilities include instinctive swordsmanship without formal training, allowing him to cleanly slice any target with any blade. He employs his signature "Stroke of Repentance," a three-sword style, and attained a demonic form during battles.
He maintains a sibling-like rivalry with Hibachi, frequently clashing but showing underlying care. His dislike of dogs remains a consistent trait.
