Description
Nodoka Toyohama is Mai Sakurajima's younger half-sister, sharing the same father but a different mother. She developed a significant inferiority complex towards Mai stemming from their mothers' rivalry, a situation which pushed both sisters into entertainment careers early on. Constantly compared to Mai by her own mother, Nodoka's feelings of inadequacy and resentment grew, culminating in her running away from home during her second year of high school.
A member of the idol group Sweet Bullet and a student at an elite all-girls high school, Nodoka stands 5'2" (158 cm). She has wavy blond hair, typically worn in a ponytail, and blue eyes. Her natural childhood hair and eye colors were light brown and chocolate-brown, suggesting she may dye her hair or use contacts as an idol. Her personality is confident, competitive, and prone to tsundere behavior, often appearing immature and short-tempered, especially around Sakuta Azusagawa. She struggles with self-discipline, such as cleaning, but is academically competent.
Nodoka and Mai switched bodies due to Adolescence Syndrome, forcing Nodoka to live as her sister. She struggled intensely with Mai's responsibilities, including school and professional commitments like photoshoots and film work. The pressure of impersonation led to a breakdown during a September 12th photoshoot where she hyperventilated and collapsed. Her distress peaked on September 21st after seeing her mother praise Mai (in Nodoka's body) during a Sweet Bullet performance, prompting a suicide attempt by drowning. Sakuta intervened, revealing childhood letters Nodoka wrote to Mai that proved Mai cherished their relationship. This led to an emotional reconciliation where Nodoka confessed her hatred of Mai's perfection and desperate need for maternal approval. Mai reassured Nodoka she didn't need to emulate her, allowing both to return to their original bodies.
Afterwards, Nodoka clashed with her mother again and moved into Mai's apartment, repairing their sisterly bond. She befriended Kaede Azusagawa, helping her study for entrance exams and attending Sweet Bullet concerts together. Nodoka also expressed gratitude to Sakuta for his support, acknowledging his importance to Mai. Her character evolved from resentment and self-doubt towards self-acceptance and stronger familial connections.
In later years, Nodoka enrolled at Yokohama City University while continuing her activities with Sweet Bullet. By age 21, she maintained her idol career alongside her studies.
