Briareos is a cybernetically enhanced individual operating in a post-apocalyptic world. Eight optical sensors scan from his predominantly mechanical form: four positioned on his face, with the central unit functioning as a nasal sensor; two more located at the base of rear-facing antennae; and a final pair at the antennae tips enabling peripheral vision and corner surveillance without exposing his main body, supporting advanced combat awareness and targeting. Only roughly twenty-five percent of his original biological body remains after extensive reconstruction. Residual organic systems include a cardiovascular network and digestive tract, allowing consumption of food and beverages with physiological effects like inebriation; his reproductive system was lost during conversion. His human brain persists within the mechanical body, relocated to the thoracic cavity and supplemented by an auxiliary biocomputer in his skull for enhanced processing. This brain retains all pre-cyborgization memories and personality, though vocal output is modulated through a polyphonic synthesizer. Originating from the Mediterranean, Briareos was exploited for terrorist activities by state actors during childhood. He later gained asylum after eliminating his handler, resulting in his designation on international most-wanted lists. During pre-war service in a metropolitan special weapons unit, he partnered with Deunan Knute under her father's command. Their professional relationship evolved into a personal bond that endured through joint military service in a global conflict. Near-fatal injuries from an explosion at age thirty-one necessitated full-body cybernetic replacement using the experimental Hecatonchires system – named after hundred-armed giants of Greek mythology. This platform enables simultaneous control of numerous independent limbs or remote systems without cognitive overload, theoretically permitting solo operation of complex machinery like aircraft carriers. Early in his career, Briareos and his partner incurred debts to a local warlord, Two Horns, following repairs to his combat-damaged systems. Their creditor's mechanic deliberately impaired Briareos' functionality to ensure dependence, manifesting as power drainage and reduced operational capacity. This sabotage compromised sensory acuity and physical performance during missions in the New York ruins. While neutralizing rogue drones, Briareos encountered two individuals from the utopian city of Olympus: Olson, a cybernetically augmented soldier, and Iris, a human-appearing companion. Olson diagnosed and rectified the impairments, restoring full combat functionality. This proved critical during subsequent confrontations with the renegade Olympus agent Talos and his subordinate Nyx. Briareos engaged Nyx in direct combat, destroying her mechanical body before crushing her remaining organic head component. In the conflict's culmination, Briareos utilized a sniper rifle to destroy the power core of Talos' activated superweapon – a mobile fortress programmed for urban annihilation. This action eliminated both the weapon system and Iris, who remained aboard to facilitate the core's vulnerability. Following these events, Two Horns discharged their debt obligations, permitting departure toward Olympus. Briareos demonstrates physical capabilities exceeding human norms, including vehicular displacement and extended vertical movement. His tactical approach emphasizes precision and controlled aggression, often employing ranged weaponry like anti-materiel rifles. His relationship with Deunan Knute remains a consistent emotional anchor, characterized by mutual protection and occasional friction over risk tolerance and future aspirations. Post-mission developments indicate a shift toward guarded optimism regarding their shared destiny. Cybernetic maintenance requires periodic manual recalibration of optical systems following damage. Environmental sensors incorporate thermoregulatory membranes facilitating human-like perspiration. Despite mechanical advantages, his body remains vulnerable to ballistic penetration, explosive trauma, systemic failure, and eventual biological aging.
