Description
Tetsuro Hoshino emerges from impoverished origins on Earth, witnessing his mother Kanae Hoshino murdered by Count Mecha, a mechanized human hunting humans for sport. This trauma drives his initial quest for an immortal machine body, seeking vengeance and fulfilling his mother's dying wish. A mysterious woman named Maetel, resembling his deceased mother, offers him passage on the intergalactic train Galaxy Express 999, launching his cosmic journey.

Three years after the first film's events and Planet Maetel's destruction, Tetsuro resurfaces as a 15-year-old resistance fighter on Earth, now a battlefield in humanity's war against the Machine Empire. Learning of the Galaxy Express 999's return and Maetel's presence, he rejoins the train despite his disillusionment with mechanization. His appearance reflects maturity: messy brown hair remains, but practical attire like a green jacket and gloves replaces his ragged poncho. The hat gifted by Tochiro Oyama's mother stays a constant accessory.

During this journey, Tetsuro encounters Metalmena, a mechanical waitress replacing the deceased Claire, and befriends Meowdar, a cat-like youth involved in the resistance on La Metal. His quest leads to a confrontation with the Black Knight Faust, revealed as his father whose consciousness was forcibly transferred into a machine body. Faust forces Tetsuro to relive his mother's death, deepening his understanding of the Machine Empire's cruelty.

Tetsuro's personality evolves; while retaining a strong sense of justice and empathy, his experiences harden him into a more strategic and resilient fighter. He exhibits leadership within the resistance, motivated by protecting humanity rather than personal vengeance. His inherent curiosity persists, tempered by war and loss. His relationship with Maetel grows complex as he uncovers her role as Queen Prometheum's daughter and her intent to dismantle the empire from within, leading to conflict but mutual resolve.

The journey culminates on the Machine Empire's capital, Great Andromeda, where Tetsuro discovers the empire drains energy from living humans transported via the Ghost Train. Witnessing Meowdar among the victims solidifies his rejection of mechanization. Metalmena sacrifices herself after realizing her energy source derives from human suffering. Tetsuro participates in the final assault against Prometheum and the empire, aided by entities like Siren the Witch, which absorbs machine energy.

Tetsuro's arc concludes with his definitive rejection of the machine body he once sought. He chooses to embrace human mortality and vulnerability, resolving to return to Earth and forge a future where humanity resists mechanization's empty promise of immortality. His departure from Maetel is bittersweet, acknowledging their shared history while accepting her path to guide others.
