Description
Nello is the young orphan protagonist from the classic tragic story The Dog of Flanders, reimagined in the parody film Tensai Bakavon ~Yomigaeru Flanders no Inu~. In this version, instead of perishing and ascending to heaven alongside his loyal dog Patrash, Nello and his canine companion refuse that peaceful end. They choose to return to the world of the living with a burning desire for revenge against the humans who wronged them during their lifetimes. Their souls are summoned from hell by the villainous Dante, the head of a shadowy organization known as Intelliperi, who wishes to use them to extract a secret from the Bakabon family.

Nello’s background is rooted in the well‑known narrative of an impoverished, mistreated boy whose only friend was his dog. In this spoof, that tragic history fuels his personality. He is no longer the innocent, kind‑hearted child; he has become cold, resentful, and single‑minded in his quest for vengeance. His primary motivation is to make humanity pay for the suffering he endured. To achieve this, he and Patrash form a secret organization of their own, carrying out schemes and orchestrating chaos in the modern world.

In the story, Nello serves as an antagonist whose actions threaten the peace, prompting the eccentric Bakabon family to intervene. His key relationship is with Patrash, his devoted dog, who shares his bitterness and stands by his side without question. Together they function as a dark mirror of the original tale’s loyalty and friendship. Nello also has a transactional relationship with Dante, who summoned him, and a combative one with Bakabon’s father and the rest of the family, who aim to stop him.

As the film progresses, Nello undergoes a twisted development: he begins as a tragic figure consumed by spite, but through his encounters with the chaotic yet good‑hearted Bakabon clan, he is gradually exposed to a different way of thinking. The absurdity of the world around him challenges his rigid hatred, leading to subtle shifts in his perspective.

Notable abilities associated with Nello stem from his unnatural return from the afterlife. He possesses a supernatural resilience and the ability to command shadowy forces, though the exact extent of these powers is presented in a comedic, non‑serious manner. His most defining trait remains the unwavering bond with his dog, which even in this parody retains a kernel of the original story’s emotional core.
