TV-Series
Description
Sōji Mitsuka is a high school student defined by his intense obsession with twintail hairstyles. This fixation enables him to wield the alien Tail Gear device, transforming him into the female warrior Tail Red to defend Earth from entities harvesting human attributes.
Typically seen in his school uniform, Sōji stands 164 cm tall with dark red spiky hair and orange eyes. Activating the Tail Gear by shouting "Tail, On!" triggers a dramatic physical metamorphosis. He becomes the petite Tail Red, standing 128 cm tall with vibrant red hair styled in long twintails fading to fiery orange. Her eyes shift from orange to red or light purple. Her battle attire features a black-and-white swimsuit base, a red necklace with a crystal center, black metal cuffs with gloves, black tights with red tops, and red-black-white metal boots. Her signature weapon, the Blazer Blade, is a fiery sword summoned from her hair ribbons.
Tail Red embodies Sōji's sense of justice but displays youthful quirks like playing with her own twintails when alone. She retains Sōji's masculine speech patterns ("ore") despite her feminine appearance, and her confidence wavers when enemies mock her childlike form. Sōji initially feels embarrassment over Tail Red's widespread popularity, though he privately cherishes the form's twintails. A pivotal moment occurs when antagonist Dark Grasper kisses Tail Red. This act causes Sōji to develop an attraction extending beyond twintails, a perceived betrayal of his core obsession that destabilizes the Tail Gear. This malfunction causes partial depowerment and unpredictable transformations.
The malfunction manifests as Sōra (or Sōlar), an intermediate 146 cm tall form blending Sōji and Tail Red's features. Sōra possesses a more developed physique than Tail Red, sparking envy in teammate Aika. Existing as Sōra signifies Sōji's weakening connection to the twintail attribute; attempting transformation into Tail Red from this state leaves him powerless. Recovery requires Sōji to reaffirm his dedication to twintails within his subconscious, aided by the Twin-Tail God entity. This process restores his abilities and unlocks advanced combat forms.
Despite her small stature, Tail Red exhibits formidable superhuman strength and agility. Wielding the Blazer Blade, she can dual-wield using both hair ribbons. Extreme emotional distress triggers her Aura Pillar homing energy beam. As leader of the Twintail Warriors, she accesses multiple power-up forms: Riser Chain (enhanced attack strength), Faller Chain (increased speed), Fellraiser Chain (combined speed and strength), Ultimate Chain (initially her strongest form, achieved via dual Tail Gear braces), Gold Chain (surpassing Ultimate Chain), and the further-evolved Cosmo Chain.
Sōji's lifelong twintail obsession was intensified by childhood friend Aika's teasing use of the hairstyle. His journey begins when school president Erina Shindō is attacked by Ultimagills. The interdimensional being Twoearle grants Sōji the Tail Gear, revealing his unique male suitability due to unmatched attribute affinity. After his debut battle as Tail Red, he navigates the alter ego's fame while secretly enjoying its twintails. His mother, Miharu Mitsuka, knows his dual identity and offers nonchalant support. He inadvertently attracts romantic attention from Twoearle, Erina, and Aika, creating an unintended harem dynamic.
Trivia notes include his birthday on February 2 (Japan's Twintail Day) and the unexplained age discrepancy between Sōji and Tail Red. Linguistically, the name "Sōji Mitsuka" reflects "lover of all twin-tails."
