Description
Laala Manaka is a human female with lavender hair typically styled in two buns adorned by a pink bow, and sea green eyes. Her appearance undergoes a transformation upon entering the PriPara world, where she becomes taller, sports long pigtails, and adopts a more mature look. This form once temporarily reverted to mirror her real-world self during specific events before being restored.
Bright, cheerful, and energetic, she is often seen bouncing off the walls. She possesses an exceptionally loud speaking voice that makes her self-conscious, leading her to sing quietly outside of performances. Within PriPara, however, she gains the confidence to sing loudly. Highly determined and strong-willed, she can be stubborn when pursuing her goals or the happiness of others. She has a habit of mixing up word pronunciations and meanings. Her catchphrase is "Capisce!" (かしこまっ!, Kashikoma!), which she uses informally, a habit picked up from working at her family's restaurant.
Her family runs Papa's Pasta, and she has a younger sister, Non Manaka, with whom she shares a supportive relationship. She is very close to her childhood friend, Nao Ehime. In PriPara, her key relationships include Mirei Minami, who convinced her to become an idol and is her teammate in the unit SoLaMi♡SMILE, and Sophy Hojo, another teammate. She has a manager named Kuma and formed a close bond with a character named Jewlulu, becoming her adoptive mother. She later becomes classmates and roommates with Yui Yumekawa at Avocado Academy.
Her background involves an initial struggle with her loud voice and lack of confidence, which she overcomes through her experiences in PriPara. This development includes learning to embrace her unique voice and step out of her comfort zone, in turn helping others find their own happiness. She possesses an ability called the Prism Voice, though its full effects are not entirely clear.
In *Pretty Rhythm: All Star Selection*, she appears as a central figure seeking to become an idol. There, she receives lessons and advice on how to be the best idol from the main protagonists of previous Pretty Rhythm series: Aira Harune, Mia Ageha, and Naru Ayase. These segments frame the rebroadcast of select episodes from the earlier series, with the veteran idols sharing stories from their experiences to guide her.
Throughout her idol career, she dons numerous costume changes, known as Coords. Significant among these are the Twinkle Ribbon Cyalume Coord, the SoLaMi♡SMILE L Team Cyalume Coord, and the Super Cyalume Laala Coord. She is the first idol to obtain a Super Cyalume Coord and the only idol to obtain the Final Fairy. She was also the first to receive and use the Cyalume Baton to perform the Kami Idol Challenge.
Her name, Laala, is based on the sixth note of the Solfège scale, following a naming theme with other characters. Her surname, Manaka, means "center," forming part of a pun with her teammates' surnames meaning "south" and "north."
