Kaoru Nekota lives in a small town in the suburbs of Tokyo, born into an ordinary family and raised in a routine manner. The character looks forward to starting junior high school in the spring.

Since childhood, Kaoru has possessed an unusual ability to see creatures known as Imadoki youkai, or Modern Monsters, which remain invisible to ordinary people. This ability has always been kept a complete secret.

The Imadoki youkai are distinct from traditional Japanese folklore specters, appearing instead as modern entities within everyday surroundings. These youkai are often responsible for trivial yet persistent annoyances in daily life, such as loose socks, uneven disposable chopsticks, or mistaking rinse for shampoo.

Kaoru’s experiences include various encounters with these modern youkai.
