Description
Seiji Sagara, a teenage student living in Pikarigaoka, is the childhood friend and neighbor of Aino Megumi. His deep familiarity with her personality, encompassing both her strengths and vulnerabilities, enables him to quickly deduce her secret identity as Cure Lovely when her attempts at deception falter.
He possesses brown hair and brown eyes. Seiji typically wears his school uniform, but opts for casual attire outside school: a red jacket, dark green pants, and red sneakers. His summer wardrobe consists of a light gray short-sleeved jacket over a red T-shirt, paired with dark blue jeans. His height is 160 cm.
Seiji is calm, friendly, and possesses a strong sense of nobility. He deeply admires Megumi's unwavering cheerfulness and dedication to helping others, though he often worries about her impulsiveness. His commitment to justice drives him to consistently offer assistance to those in need.
His family includes his younger sister, Sagara Mao, whom he actively cares for, and his mother, Sagara Hiroko. Limited time is spent with his mother due to her work schedule. The family frequently dines at Megumi's household, where her mother treats Mao kindly.
Seiji trains at a karate dojo, occasionally sparring with Hikawa Iona. This martial arts skill allows him to defend himself against minor Phantom Empire threats like Choiarks, despite lacking magical powers. After discovering Megumi is a Pretty Cure, he becomes an unofficial supporter and spotter for the team, utilizing a dedicated communication device called the Cure Line.
A significant story arc involves his jealousy toward Blue, Earth's guardian deity, stemming from Blue's closeness to Megumi. This emotional conflict is exploited by the primary antagonist Red in episode 45, who implants a red crystal to brainwash him. Under Red's control, Seiji dons black attire with silver armor and fights against the Cures in episodes 46–47. Megumi ultimately frees him using an enhanced attack combined with a heartfelt apology for overlooking his feelings, which shatters the crystal. Post-redemption, he supports Megumi's bond with Blue.
His relationship with Megumi is explicitly platonic; both describe their connection as sibling-like despite his unspoken romantic feelings. He interacts with other characters including Omori Yuko (a fellow childhood friend), Shirayuki Hime (who briefly develops a temporary crush on him), and Kaidou Yuuya (a classmate for whom he arranges a date). His younger sister Mao experiences multiple encounters with Phantom Empire forces, including being trapped in a mirror to create Saiarks.
