Description
Cilan's Pansage, a Grass-type Pokémon, was his first partner, establishing their bond before he became the Striaton City Gym Leader. It serves as Cilan's primary Pokémon, relied upon consistently for battles and assistance with tasks like cooking and evaluating Trainer-Pokémon compatibility.

Pansage demonstrates notable agility and speed in battle, frequently employing evasive maneuvers. It effectively dodged multiple Water Gun attacks from Ash's Oshawott during Cilan's Gym battle. Its known moves include Bite, Solar Beam, Bullet Seed, Dig, and Rock Tomb. Pansage first used Dig to pursue a wild Dwebble and employed Rock Tomb strategically against Chili's Pansear. It participated in significant battles, including a tag-team match alongside Ash's Unfezant against Soren's Braviary and Rocko's Drilbur, securing victory through combined moves. However, it lost to Skyla's Swoobat in a Gym battle after being overwhelmed by aerial speed and Gust attacks.

The bond between Cilan and Pansage is characterized by deep mutual trust and companionship. They consistently support each other in confrontations, with Cilan intervening to protect Pansage when necessary and Pansage reciprocating this loyalty. This partnership extends to non-battle activities, including culinary preparations and collaborative efforts during Cilan's connoisseur evaluations.

Pansage's development centers on its consistent role as Cilan's main companion throughout their journey. It did not evolve during documented appearances but contributed to pivotal moments, such as encouraging a wild Dwebble to reclaim its stolen shell. This event led to Dwebble joining Cilan's team and later evolving into Crustle. After Cilan departed Ash's group to travel toward Johto, Pansage remained his partner. During this period, it sustained injuries battling a wild Gyarados but later assisted in calming the same Gyarados using Grass Whistle after recovery, enabling medical treatment by Brock.
