OVA
Description
Lingyin Huang, nicknamed Rin, moved from China into Ichika Orimura's neighborhood during his fifth-grade year, following Houki Shinonono's family relocation. Her family ran a Chinese restaurant that Ichika frequented due to his sister Chifuyu's frequent absences. While attending middle school in Japan, Lingyin endured bullying because of her nationality. Ichika repeatedly intervened, such as shielding her from four bullies, sparking her romantic feelings. She secured Ichika's promise that he would become her boyfriend if she became an exceptional cook. Ichika later forgot this promise, leading to her disappointment and hostility upon their reunion at IS Academy, where she enrolled as China's IS Representative Candidate after her parents' divorce forced her return to China during junior high.
Petite in stature, Lingyin has light brown hair styled in long twin tails secured by yellow ribbons and green eyes. Her smile often reveals visible fangs. She modifies her standard IS Academy uniform with detached sleeves and wears a pink variant for training and combat. Sensitive about her small bust size (B75-W54-H78), she lashes out aggressively at any comments or comparisons, exemplified by her reaction to Ichika's glance at Charlotte Dunois's chest.
Lingyin exhibits an energetic, competitive personality, frequently engaging in rivalries with other girls over Ichika's attention. Her impulsiveness leads her to act without considering consequences, causing disciplinary issues with Chinese authorities. Extreme jealousy manifests in actions like deploying her IS, Shenlong, to attack Ichika after learning Charlotte was female and had shared a bath with him. Despite this volatility, she forms a close, competitive friendship with Cecilia Alcott, collaborating on schemes such as spying on Ichika and Charlotte. Lingyin harbors delusional fantasies about Ichika, sometimes confusing them with reality, and flusters easily in romantic scenarios.
As an IS pilot, Lingyin matches Cecilia Alcott's level, excelling in one-on-one combat but underperforming when angered. She demonstrates quick reflexes, such as partially deploying her IS to block Houki's kendo strike. Her unit is the third-generation melee-type Shenlong. Outside combat, she is a skilled cook specializing in Chinese cuisine, honed through her family's restaurant. However, her impulsive tendencies often undermine her abilities.
During the "Long Vacation Edition" OVA, Lingyin participates in beach activities, jumping onto Ichika's shoulders during volleyball and challenging him to a swimming race. She nearly drowns in the race after a leg cramp (anime) or accidentally inhaling water (light novel), requiring rescue by Ichika. This segment highlights her playful rivalry with Cecilia, including applying suntan oil in a tickling manner, and her persistent but flawed attempts to gain Ichika's attention.
Her relationships center on rivalry and unresolved feelings. She resents being labeled Ichika's "second childhood friend" behind Houki and initially perceives Charlotte Dunois and Laura Bodewig as threats. She fears her supervisor, Lei Lei Yang, and shares a bond with Cecilia rooted in mutual competition. Lingyin's ideal world, revealed during the "World Purge" arc, reflects a desire for a romanticized middle-school relationship with Ichika, underscoring her lingering attachment to their past.
