TV-Series
Description
Ai Shindou is a cat youmu, a supernatural creature who primarily takes the form of a petite teenage girl. She appears human with wavy mid-back-length brown hair, short fringes, blue eyes, a round innocent face, a soft voice, and stands 146 cm tall. Overwhelming emotion triggers her reversion to her true form: a Scottish Fold cat distinguished by white-tipped tails. Her typical attire is a dark blue sailor uniform, though she sometimes wears other outfits such as a yellow kimono with a cream obi during festivals.

She resides with her older sister, Ayaka Shindou, at a photo studio. There, Ai assists with housework and models for Ayaka's photography. As a second-year student at Nagatsuki City High School, she attends classes and befriends peers like Sakura Inami. Ai possesses a bubbly, cheerful, and easily excitable personality, often leading to involuntary transformations. She exhibits warmth and gentleness, consistently supporting those around her to maintain calm.

Her involvement in key events includes aiding characters like Mirai Kuriyama and Akihito Kanbara during youmu-related incidents. During the Fruit Type youmu incident at school, she formed an idol band and served as lead singer to distract the creature. When the Calm—a phenomenon weakening youmu—occurred, she fell into lethargy and nearly suffered an attack from Akihito's youmu side before Ayaka intervened. Later, she was absorbed into the massive youmu Beyond the Boundary, fighting hostile entities inside alongside Akihito and Mirai.

In the sequel film *Kyoukai no Kanata: I'll Be Here - Mirai-hen*, Ai tries out for the school tennis team with Mirai and Sakura, displaying natural athletic talent despite no prior experience. She also mediates between Ayaka and Hiroomi Nase regarding the Nase family's future, expressing gratitude for peaceful human-youmu coexistence. Post-film scenes show her participating in group activities like tennis matches and social gatherings.

Her abilities encompass shape-shifting, athleticism (notably in tennis), and singing, demonstrated during the idol band incident. In the original net animation *Idol Trial*, she assumes a super-deformed appearance as a sharp-tongued idol judge under black robes, contrasting her usual demeanor. She expresses interest in an idol debut in the *Mini Theater* ONA.

Her background identifies her as part of a lineage coexisting with humans and Spirit World Warriors. Her surname "Shindō" combines "new" (新) and "temple" (堂), while her given name "Ai" means "love" or "affection" (愛).
