Description
Akane Yagyu, born in 1584, is an Oni-blooded descendant of the renowned Yagyu clan and granddaughter of Sekishusai Yagyu. This lineage grants her the rare "Demon Eye," signifying her Oni heritage, which manifests heightened sensory perception and reactive power during intense emotion. Her peaceful childhood in Yagyu Village ended with her uncle Munenori Yagyu's betrayal. Believing Sekishusai murdered his mother to replace his eye, Munenori slaughtered clan members, including Akane's father, driving her to vow revenge and inherit the Jubei name to restore the clan's honor.
Trained in Yagyu Seigo-ryu, Akane honed her skills over eight years. At age 13, she entered the "Battle for Jubei's Succession." Despite coordinated attacks from rivals viewing her as the primary threat, her superior speed and prowess prevailed. After three days in the mountains, she defeated her final opponent, Sukekuro. Sekishusai formally bestowed the title "Jubei" upon her, emphasizing the Yagyu Sword as a "blade of life" not for selfish use. The ceremony was covertly witnessed by Tenkai Nankobo, seeking Sekishusai's aid against Hideyoshi Toyotomi and the Genma.
During the succession celebrations, Munenori and the Genma attacked Yagyu Village. Genma Insects infected villagers, including Sukekuro, while Munenori confronted Sekishusai. Akane aided uninfected clansmen but was forced to kill infected Yagyu. Her Demon Eye triggered a rampage against the Genma before she rushed to protect Sekishusai. Munenori impaled Sekishusai during their duel, explosively awakening Akane's Oni blood and destroying their surroundings. Sekishusai survived long enough to restrain Munenori, urging Akane to kill them both. Initially unresponsive in her Oni state, she regained control and struck, incapacitating all three. Munenori spared her upon retreating, revealing his own Demon Eye. Tenkai later purified the village. After ten days of recovery, Akane departed to hunt Munenori.
Her journey led her to ally with Soki (Yuki Hideyasu) in *Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams*. Initially seeking to defeat the "Blue Demon," she lost their duel at the Plains Outpost in Suruga and joined his fight against the Genma. Her primary goal remained confronting Munenori, who served Hideyoshi and the Genma. She utilized her small stature to access restricted areas and employed shikomizue (swordsticks) for swift iaijutsu-style attacks, contributing significantly to battles against Genma forces. Her relationship with Soki evolved ambiguously, leaving her questioning if her feelings were romantic or fraternal. After Munenori stole the Genma Seed to resurrect the Genma god Fortinbras, Akane witnessed Soki's final battle. Post-conflict, she wore an eye patch to cover her Demon Eye and embarked on a new journey spurred by rumors that "someone is still alive."
In the manga *Onimusha: Night of Genesis*, Akane's quest for Munenori continued. Traveling toward Osaka, she encountered Kuina, a villager who mistook her for a local menace. Learning the true threat was a self-proclaimed "Onimusha" practicing Nito-ryu, Akane confronted him at hot springs, discovering he was not Munenori but an impostor named Musashi. Dubbing him "Phony-musha," she engaged him in battle, showcasing her tactical superiority.
Physically, Akane stands approximately 5'2"–5'5" with dark brown hair. Her left eye is brown, while her right eye (the Demon Eye) is red, later concealed by an eye patch. Her combat abilities include "Kunai Poison," stunning enemies by infusing kunai with Oni energy; "Hidden Anger," channeling elemental forces through her weapons at the cost of reduced self-healing; and "Oni no tsuyo-sa," temporarily enhancing her speed and strength via ancestral Oni power, though it exhausts her afterward.
