Yūta Togashi begins high school deeply ashamed of his middle school "chūnibyō" phase, where he embraced the dramatic persona "Dark Flame Master," complete with gothic attire, multiple belts, and elaborate declarations about wielding dark flames in supernatural battles. This behavior caused social isolation, leading him to seek a fresh start at a distant high school.
He has short brown hair with a fringe, green eyes, and a slightly tanned complexion, standing about 170 cm tall and weighing 60 kg. He typically wears his school uniform—a white shirt, tan sweater, red tie, and blazer—or casual jeans and hoodies. His family includes parents and two younger sisters, Kuzuha and Yumeha, with whom he shares a responsible, housekeeping-oriented relationship.
Striving for normalcy, Yūta encounters Rikka Takanashi, a neighbor and classmate who actively lives her chūnibyō as the "Wicked Eye." Initially annoyed by her antics, he nonetheless joins her club, the Far Eastern Magical Napping Society of Summer, alongside former chūnibyō Shinka Nibutani and others. Yūta often acts as Rikka's minder, using head chops or snark to curb her delusions, though this sometimes borders on hypocrisy given his own past.
His relationship with Rikka evolves romantically as he discovers her delusions stem from trauma over her father's death; she uses them to cope and search for the "Ethereal Horizon" she associates with him. Yūta gradually reconciles with his Dark Flame Master identity, employing it to communicate with Rikka and support her emotionally. They begin dating by the end of the first season, though Rikka's chūnibyō complicates their relationship.
Their bond deepens in the second season amid challenges, including Rikka's relationship uncertainty and the arrival of Satone Shichimiya, who originally inspired Yūta's Dark Flame Master persona. During the film *Take on Me*, Yūta and Rikka elope across Japan to prevent her move to Italy. This journey culminates in Yūta reaffirming his acceptance of Rikka's entire identity, leading to their first kiss. He gifts her a butterfly-shaped ring as a symbol of their commitment. Post-film, they attend her sister Tōka's wedding, and Rikka moves to an apartment two floors above Yūta's, maintaining her habit of visiting via rope descent.
Throughout his development, Yūta shifts from rejecting his chūnibyō past to recognizing it as an inseparable part of himself. His pragmatic, often deadpan demeanor coexists with lingering tendencies to slip into Dark Flame Master theatrics, especially under stress or to engage Rikka. He ultimately embraces this duality, using it to strengthen his role as Rikka's understanding partner.
