Description
Konohamaru Sarutobi, grandson of Konohagakure's Third Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi, carries a name signifying "leaf perfection," embodying his grandfather's view of the entire village as family. This heritage earned him the deferential title "Honourable Grandson" (お孫様, Omago-sama), fueling his fierce desire for individual recognition beyond his lineage. He persistently challenged Hiruzen to battle, aiming to defeat him and claim the Hokage title.
His perspective shifted dramatically after encountering Naruto Uzumaki. Unlike others, Naruto treated him normally, even hitting him during their first meeting after Konohamaru blamed him for a mishap. Impressed, Konohamaru began emulating Naruto, addressing him as "boss" (オヤブン, oyabun) or "big brother" (兄ちゃん, Nīchan). He adopted Naruto's boisterous demeanor, created perverted ninjutsu like variations of the Sexy Technique, and ended sentences with "kore" (コレ), mirroring Naruto's verbal tic. Crucially, he embraced Naruto's philosophy that becoming Hokage demands relentless effort with no shortcuts, dedicating himself to intense training.
Konohamaru entered the Chūnin Exams hosted by Sunagakure, facing Naruto in the preliminary rounds. Bickering caused both to miss the rules explanation. Konohamaru initiated combat with a smoke bomb and surprised Naruto by using the Big Ball Rasengan, a technique Naruto hadn't taught him. After Naruto dodged, Konohamaru employed the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique, though Naruto's clones proved superior. Despite being battered, encouragement from the crowd and Naruto spurred Konohamaru on. He then combined the Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique with Fire Release: Ash Pile Burning, forcing Naruto airborne where Konohamaru landed a punch. Naruto's subsequent activation of Sage Mode violated the exam's explicit ban on senjutsu, resulting in his disqualification. Konohamaru won by default, passed the exam, and became a chūnin, immediately declaring Naruto his subordinate to Naruto's frustration, though Kakashi and Gaara consoled Naruto by noting his peers' surpassing.
Beyond the exams, Konohamaru showed significant growth. He mastered the Rasengan under Naruto's tutelage, developing a Wind Release variant capable of tearing through water, which he used to defeat one of Pain's Paths during Konoha's invasion. He later achieved the rank of jōnin and became sensei to Boruto Uzumaki's team, viewing this mentorship as repayment for Naruto's influence. He developed a brotherly bond with Boruto, secretly appreciating being called "Big Brother," and formed a connection with Hanabi Hyūga over their shared care for him. Despite enduring tragedies like the deaths of his grandfather Hiruzen and uncle Asuma Sarutobi, he consistently displayed resilience, likely shaped by Naruto's example of overcoming profound loss.
