Sōun Ebisugawa, younger brother of Sōichirō Shimogamo and uncle to the Shimogamo brothers, harbors enduring resentment after losing both the romantic rivalry for Yasaburō’s mother and the election for Nise-emon, leadership of Kyoto’s tanuki society. This envy fuels his betrayal of Sōichirō, collaborating with Benten to orchestrate his brother’s capture and eventual execution by the Friday Fellows. Severing ties with the Shimogamos, he pursues the Nise-emon title through wealth and political maneuvering, seeking to erase their influence.
Though outwardly courteous and esteemed among tanuki, Sōun conceals a ruthless, calculating nature. He manipulates events through his twin sons, Ginkaku and Kinkaku, who harass the Shimogamos—especially young Yashirō—while he expands control over the Ebisugawa Power Plant and Electric Wine Factory to cement his authority. His daughter Kaisei’s ethical divergence from the family complicates his schemes, prompting him to annul her betrothal to Yasaburō to spite his rivals.
In a calculated ruse, Sōun fakes his death by assuming the identity of his disowned eldest son, Kureichirō, continuing his machinations covertly. His vendetta escalates until a final confrontation drives him to transform into a one-horned oni—a desperate act that backfires when Jurojin, leader of the Friday Fellows, shoots him in panicked retaliation. His demise marks the tragic endpoint of a life consumed by ambition and bitterness, though Yasaburō recognizes fleeting traces of sympathy for his fallen uncle.
Sōun’s gaunt features, grey hair, and orange under-eye highlights mirror his austere demeanor, while gold kimonos flaunt his status. His tanuki form, coarse and grey-furred, contrasts with Sōichirō’s boisterous vitality, embodying his relentless drive to overshadow his brother’s legacy. A pivotal antagonist, his arc explores familial fracture and envy’s destructive toll, his manipulations unraveling to reveal the cost of forsaking kinship for power.
