Pai Imperial, also known as Tori-San or Mr. Bird, is an avian companion from Earth, belonging to a fictional species resembling a large crow. This species features a long crane-like neck, a distinctive beak often covered by cloth, thin legs, and beady white eyes. Its design draws inspiration from noisy real-world birds like parrots and crows, incorporating human-like speech capabilities. His species has ancestral ties to the Oyama and Harlock families, with earlier generations appearing in Leiji Matsumoto's works. Bird himself was owned by Nobotta Oyama before being inherited by Tochiro Oyama, Captain Harlock's closest friend and the engineer of the starship Arcadia. Following Tochiro's death, Bird became primarily associated with Captain Harlock, often perching on his shoulder as a loyal companion. Bird's personality is prone to loud outbursts, occasional violence, and profane speech, frequently requiring a muzzle to prevent disruption. Despite these traits, he demonstrates deep loyalty to his owners and exhibits human-like emotions, particularly sadness when remembering Tochiro. Functionally, Bird possesses standard avian abilities like flight and feeds omnivously on scraps or small prey. His capacity for limited human speech, akin to a parrot, remains a defining trait, though it is often physically restrained. Bird's history is interwoven with key events across multiple narratives. In "Arcadia of My Youth," he appears alongside Tochiro and Harlock during their struggles against the Illumidas occupation. After Tochiro's death, Bird remained a constant presence aboard the Arcadia, symbolizing continuity between Harlock and his departed friend. In the 2013 film "Harlock: Space Pirate," Bird accompanied Harlock as the captain grappled with immortality and his plan to reset the universe. The character observed pivotal moments, including Harlock's eventual transfer of leadership to Yama (Logan), underscoring Bird's role as a silent witness to the crew's evolving dynamics. Bird's species design also appears tangentially in works like "Space Battleship Yamato" as the Rockroc, serving as a visual nod to the character, though not directly connected to Bird's storyline.
