Description
Kiriko Zubreska serves as a bureaucratic apprentice in Ortus, a city predominantly inhabited by the deceased. He originates from this city. Kiriko was not born conventionally but created by a witch using body parts from five individuals—Pox, Rex, Diva, Oreus, and Veruera—collectively known as the "Lap Star" or "Fallen Five-Pointed Star," who wished for a child after God abandoned the world. Consequently, he ages slower than normal humans and possesses knowledge inherited from all five original individuals.
Physically, Kiriko appears as a young male with short blue hair parted in the middle and orange-brown eyes. He typically wears a white uniform with a greenish coat-like poncho over it, both adorned with gold lining. Despite being 27 years old, his unique biology maintains the physical form of a 15-year-old.
Kiriko first encounters Ai Astin, Julie, and Scar when discovered sleeping in their vehicle. He later assists them with repairs and facilitates their entry into Ortus, despite the city's general hostility toward gravekeepers and the living. His governmental duties include participating in or observing city rituals, such as ceremonies where outsiders are euthanized and integrated into Ortus as new undead residents.
His most significant relationship is with Ulla Eulesse Hecmatika, the princess of Ortus. Kiriko acts as her mentor, teacher, and close friend, having guided her since childhood. He harbors deep, largely unspoken romantic feelings and is deeply devoted to her. Kiriko knows Ulla's secret—that she is biologically alive and carries a lethal curse causing death to anyone she sees, speaks to, or touches—but deliberately withholds this truth to protect her emotional well-being. His protective nature toward Ulla occasionally conflicts with his strict adherence to rules, as seen when he tries to prevent Ai from interacting with her.
During the Ortus story arc, Kiriko develops a rapport with Ai. He reveals his undead nature and origin story to her, including the identities of the five individuals forming his composite existence. He arranges for Diva, one of his constituent souls, to examine Scar's mysterious illness and later facilitates a meeting between Ai and Ulla, leading to their friendship. Kiriko witnesses Ulla performing a mass euthanasia ceremony on living humans seeking entry into Ortus, forcing him to reconcile his loyalty to Ulla with the city's harsh realities.
Personality-wise, Kiriko presents as conscientious and rule-bound, often insisting on protocol and order. This rigidity makes him a target for light teasing from Ulla and Ai. Beneath this formal exterior, he demonstrates deep empathy, particularly toward Ulla, and a willingness to assist others, evidenced by his aid to Ai's group and concern for Scar's health.
