Description
In a world where God has abandoned humanity, the dead no longer rest, and the living are unable to die, a young girl named Ai Astin becomes the Gravekeeper of her remote village. Gravekeepers are individuals tasked with laying the dead to rest, ensuring they find peace in a world where death has lost its meaning. Ai’s life takes a dramatic turn when a mysterious man named Hampnie Hambart arrives in her village, revealing that her mother, the previous Gravekeeper, had been keeping a dark secret. Hampnie, who claims to have known Ai’s mother, destroys the village and kills its inhabitants, leaving Ai to grapple with the harsh realities of her role and the world around her.

Determined to fulfill her duty as a Gravekeeper, Ai embarks on a journey across a desolate and surreal landscape, encountering various individuals and communities struggling to cope with the consequences of immortality. Along the way, she meets a boy named Scar, who becomes her companion, and later reunites with Hampnie, whose motives remain ambiguous. The narrative explores themes of mortality, loss, and the meaning of existence, as Ai confronts the ethical dilemmas of her role and the emotional toll of guiding the dead to their final rest.

The story is divided into distinct arcs, each focusing on different characters and their struggles within this broken world. One arc centers on a town where the living and the dead coexist in a fragile balance, while another delves into the tragic history of a family trapped in a cycle of undeath. Throughout her journey, Ai’s unwavering compassion and determination to uphold her responsibilities as a Gravekeeper are tested, as she learns more about the world’s mysteries and her own connection to its fate.

The series blends elements of fantasy, drama, and philosophical inquiry, presenting a world where the boundaries between life and death are blurred, and the consequences of immortality are explored through the perspectives of its diverse cast. Ai’s growth as a character is central to the narrative, as she navigates the moral complexities of her role and seeks to bring closure to those she encounters, all while uncovering the truth about her own origins and the world’s abandonment by God.
