Description
Bocchi Hitori is a middle school student with extreme social anxiety, experiencing physical symptoms like vomiting, leg cramps, and fainting when overwhelmed or nervous. Her social struggles stem from difficulty communicating, leading her to create conversation scripts that often fail. Despite this, she possesses a kind and earnest personality, frequently crying but showing determination to improve her social skills.

A pivotal moment before middle school involved her only childhood friend, Kai Yawara, severing their friendship to motivate Bocchi to befriend her entire class. This directive drives Bocchi's actions. She shares the same birthday as Kai. Academically, Bocchi excels in studying and learning, though she failed to gain admission to Kai's school due to an inability to participate in a frontal audition. Her name is a pun on the Japanese phrase for "all alone."

In appearance, Bocchi has dark brown hair with side-swept bangs, pink eyes, and wears a pink cherry blossom hairpin forming a small left-side ponytail. Her school uniform includes a medium-length skirt, black stockings, and brown shoes. At home, she frequently wears a bear onesie, considering it her "serious" outfit. Her daily habits include saving the mustard packets that come with natto, her favorite food.

Bocchi's relationships develop as she works toward her goal. Her first friend is Sunao Nako, befriended after vomiting during their initial meeting; they bond despite Nako's delinquent appearance and initially abrasive demeanor. She later befriends Honshou Aru, the clumsy and unlucky class vice representative, persisting to win her over through kindness. Sotca Luckythar, a foreign classmate obsessed with ninjas, mistakes Bocchi for a ninja and becomes her self-proclaimed disciple after a paper shuriken message; their friendship formalizes when Sotca explicitly requests it. Bocchi also interacts with classmates like Kako Kurai, the public morals officer who avoids friendships.

Throughout her journey, Bocchi exhibits slow but tangible development. She progresses from being unable to introduce herself without vomiting to initiating conversations and forming multiple friendships. Her methods evolve from reliance on pre-written scripts to more spontaneous interactions, though anxiety-related setbacks continue. She demonstrates unexpected skills, like speaking Urdu, correctly identifying a phrase meaning "the person in the front seat." Her posture improves marginally with confidence, a change later adopted by Sotca.

Bocchi shares a birthday with Kai, while Nako's birthday is the preceding day. She practices unique coping mechanisms, such as walking with a hunched posture and arms positioned in front when unconfident, and saves natto mustard packets.
